5th Year Options Picked up/Declined

The issue with Trubisky is he was more than a top 10 pick, the Bears traded up and gave up even more to get to that pick. If you factor that in, I think he has been a bigger disappointment tan any of the top 10 picks (or biggest misses).

A very good friend of mine is a Bears' fan and he's quite happy that they brought in Foles, along with a few of Foles' former coaches. He figures that Foles has a lock on the starting job.

As far as who's the bigger disappoinment goes I agree that the cost of Trubisky does make him a bigger disappointment. At least we just got burned for only 1 first round pick.

So is it okay for people to think Ross is a bust now or do you think people need to eat crow?

Is he really? Or did they just pick the wrong QB?

Ross has not performed well for a top 10 pick. That is why they did not pick up his 5th year option. But, nope he is not a bust as a NFL player,  a bust does not have the TD's he has in limited game action. I also won't call Jonah Williams a bust either since he was injured thus did nothing for the team in 2019.

As for Trubisky, I have no idea what you are trying to say? The Bears traded up for him and it cost them dearly, based on that he too has under performed his draft position and was a lot more costly. Lots of teams in the 2015 draft missed, some hit like KC and Texans.

I was just surprised to see 5 of 9 top picks not get 5th year option picked up. Maybe that is the norm, but I don't think it has been.

As for my thread after game 1 last year about Ross, yep I jumped the gun and made a mistake. No, noone needs to eat crow and maybe may never have to about John Ross, but I hope he comes out and plays great in 2020 since he is still a Bengal. Do you?

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

Aren't these two statements basically two ways to say the same thing.  Yes, he really was a stupid choice and yes, they obviously picked the wrong QB.

I think there's a very good chance that it's the new norm., that unless a player really kills it, very few fifth year options will be picked up.  And it's not even that teams don't want the players.  It's really all about the cost of the option.

I hope he plays great, but based upon what I've seen that appears to be wishful thinking.

He was drafted higher than a better QB from his own conference, the ACC.  So I don't think he is the biggest disappointment, so much as just poor performance by the GM who over thunk it.

Of the top 10 picks a surprising 50% (%) said no. Ross was not picked up by us. Trubisky was not picked up by the Bears highlighting what Fred always says how hard it is to predict success in the draft, eve in round 1 with a QB

I know many hated the Ross pick and are jumping for joy he failed to make you look good, but the facts show it was a tough draft to pick a winner, not by us, but many others as well.

I would say that Trubisky is not a very good example of "how hard it is to predict success in the draft" considering pretty much everyone panned the pick immediately...

Everyone in the world (besides apparently someone in the Bears FO) saw this as a questionable pick as best from the get-go, no hindsight needed.

So in this instance it was really easy to predict success (or lack thereof) for this first round QB.

Those grades were based on the extra cost to get him and the talent level

But, yes many said immediately bad pick.

I was at the stadium when we picked Ross. The word was were picking Ross, I remember our table was like please no one besides Ross. Time comes and they announce Ross to chorus of boos from the crowd. I hated the pick, but once it was done I had to hope and pray I was wrong. Sadly, looks like may people were right in that crowd, but not over yet.  Nervous Nervous
