I like to look at it from the Angle of Waynes is now the Bengals #1 (replacing WJ3), and Auwzie will be starting opposite him, replacing the cluster of guys we had there last year (Sims, Brown, etc etc). Hilton replaces Alexander in the slot, and as solid as Mac played IMO Hilton is an upgrade.
Also have to take into consideration the scheme, zone scheme is def NOT WJ3's best fit, he is a great man to man cover guy, and that is obviously not something this staff is going to be running as a base D.
As for Trey, I watched every game he played living here in NOLA. Anyone who says half his sacks were coverage sacks, or he got his sacks as cleanup sacks are completely WRONG. Did he benefit by playing on a line with an ALL PRO in Cam, and having solid DTs like Rankins, Onyemata, and Brown? Of course, but in NOWAY was he just getting cleanup sacks. In Fact I would say Onyemata, Rankins benefited more with Trey's get off and collapsing the pocket often and forcing the QB to step up into them. Trey quite often was the FIRST guy to get there on multiple occasions. He also started his climb to this type of play in 2019 closing out the season. 18 sacks in his last 28 games. People want to look at Pressure, qb hits etc as pass rush stats, and thats fine, they are ALL relative, but so are sacks. You can get all the pressure, and hits you want, but did they lead to a loss on the play? A SACK does. If you cant finish then pressures and hits are misleading.
You may be right that without adding another Edge rusher he may only get 3or4 sacks, but that would be because teams can slide their protection to him and focus on him more. I would hope Reader, LO, Hubbard, Geno (if he still here) and someone they add in draft or FA will help to not allow that to happen, but it would be the SAME scenario if Lawson was Trey so....
I get your gloom and doom mentality, because its warranted. I myself just cant sit here all offseason and year after year and have that mentality because then the game I love to watch and be involved in would be worthless.
I think this is my biggest issue with change all your personnel to zone. This is year 3 of Lou's zone defense. It hasnt worked in years 1 or 2. If this defense is giving up 25+ ppg and the teams 0-4 after 4 games does Lou survive the season? I think he'll be fired during the season or after it because he's a shitty coach but that's my opinion. If the Defense is that bad and say the Bengals finish the season 6-10, I think the whole coaching staff is gone. So now your stuck with having to hire a coach who'll bring a coach who'll only coach zone.
As far as Trey, I respect your opinion on his game, however, i was watching highlights of his sacks from last season, and mehhh. Dude has a high end motor and doesn't quit. He's not very fleet of foot and power rushes. Quite a few of his sacks were due to coverage down field, which he wont have here because in NO he had 2 Tier 1 CB's. I personally seen a lot of clean up sacks nothing that he came around the corner and blew past the OT like Lawson would do.
As far as Geno, dudes either going to get his 14M or he'll more than likely be playing else where next year. He knows his worth. He knows he'll be able to get 8-10M on the open market and the Bengals aren't going to pay him that. I'd love to keep the guy cause I think he's a HOF and he deserves to retire in a Bengals uniform but its all about business.
