Mahomes was the highest paid QB for 2 straight years after his deal without anyone else getting signed passing him despite Allen, Prescott, and Stafford all getting paid after him. Not counting the obvious Carr/D Jones/Mayfield/G Smith all still getting less years later. Even Kirk Cousins 4 years later only matched the annual amount of Mahomes.

Players don't just automatically leapfrog to the highest paid every time. Plenty of guys sign for less than the #1 paid guy.
