What are some of the better value and experiences I should consider in building a collection?
My ideal is keeping 3 good regular rotations and two special occasion bottles.
I favor smoky caramel and vanilla, but good spirits are good spirits!
some great regulars I would recommend are Heaven's Door (by Bob Dylan), 1792, Elijah Craig, anything from Woodford Reserve (I'm a big fan of Double Oak), anything from Maker's Mark (I'm a big fan of Maker's Mark 46 French Oak).
As for special occasion items, it depends on what you have access to where you live. Here in VA, there are a lot of things that you just can't get without winning a lottery to have the right to purchase the bottle, where as in other places you just have to have the money for it. I was in Georgetown, DC over the weekend and had access to all of the unicorn bottles I could ever want. I dropped $660 on 4 bottles that would have cost $300 total if I could buy them in a VA ABC store, but the inability to get them here is why I spent that money on the open market (there were bottles that run as much as $20k).
