Trey's job is to get the QB on the ground. That said, it's not like he has 50% less of other stats compared to other EDs. The only thing he lacks in that regard is raw tackles. With that said, he's top 10 in 'stops' according to PFF and on PFR he's 6th in tackles for loss and 2nd in QB hits since '21.
Hell, in raw combined tackles, he's still 23rd since '21.
He doesn't need to be a better run defender to earn an elite contract.
Miles Garrett is 12th in combined tackles since '21.
TJ Watt is 19th in combined tackles since '21.
Nick Bosa is 24th.
Joey Bosa is 40th.
Not diminishing the numbers (because they are legit), but stops = offensive failure: a stop on 3rd/4th down that doesn't equal a 1st down or a negative play (sack, TFL) is a stop, thus his sacks factor into this more than simply run tackles and the like.
As well, a sack counts as a TFL if it is at least 1 yard of a loss, thus the number is a bit misleading as well, as it doesn't separate actual tackles for loss (on a run or pass play) from sacks.
But I agree with everything you say :)
