I would rather set it as the expectation now, then keep it in limbo. 

I would also rather have the Option to tag him at 24M, opposed to being in a 3 year 90M deal that runs through his age 33 season.

Sometimes contracts work out better for the player, sometimes they work out better for the team.  It can not always be perfect, and yes, sometimes a player plays over their current value.
