It is based on the premise of "While the sheer amount of injuries a team has to deal with certainly takes its toll, most of the time the quality of players being lost is the more important variable."
In this chart, the Bengals ranked 11th in terms of having the most impactful injuries last year. Not good. But I would point out that the Detroit Lions were absolutely wrecked by injuries last year (which grew even worse after this chart was made), and they still managed to end 15 and 2. It really speaks to the need for the Bengals to invest both in quality depth and have a system whereby the team is not devastated by a few key injuries.
The defense actually seemed to improve as guys got hurt. We also won more late in the year.
That kind of debunks the injuries destroyed the season narrative.
