Deep Web Discussion

The surface web (or clearnet) comprises about 6% of the total internet. These are all the sites that are can be indexed and searched via regular engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., as well as archive sites that can be accessed by more specialized engines.

The deep web is basically everything else. However, within that other 94% of the internet, the deep web is comprised of 3 sections. One is what some refer to as the "invisible web" or "data net". This is where all private information is encrypted, stored and accessed.

The second section (the hidden web) is similar to the surface web, except that it's comprised of sites that haven't been indexed for various reasons. Often included in the section are very old sites that haven't been crawled in years or private sites that intentionally were never indexed. These places can be very difficult to search, even with a very specialized engine, but there are some absolute gems to be found. The sites can be accessed from both the surface web and the deep web.

The last section, and becoming increasingly more notorious, is the dark net, which requires a specific type of setup such as Tor, Freenet or I2P and preferably an environment like like Whonix, Qubes or Tails. There is a good quantity of absolutely incredible sites and resources on the dark net and it's also a great place for sharing information without ISP's, search engines or the government looking over your shoulder (assuming you take the proper precautions). The problem is that there are also many nefarious things that occur on the dark net as well. Within the realm of the dark net, anonymity and security are of the utmost importance. These sites also do not have normal web addresses, but instead have .onion domains.
