Hard to say, but why take a chance.  They'd be better off to work behind the scenes with one of the vets (like Michael Johnson) and let him become a free agent for a day so they can do their IR work, then resign him back to the 53.  

If they were straight up about it with MJ he'd probably go for it.  At this stage of his career why not, probably wants to retire where he started.
