Ross Browner for a Defensive Player came very close in the voting.  He was a big part of the Defense that went Super Bowl.

I mention this with another Defensive Edge Rusher in the running for the QB or RB Heisman.  Chase Young.

A D player up for the Heisman is almost as rare as Haley's comet.   It is indeed a QB or RB award.

Ross Browner had 213 points in the Heisman voting in 1977 while the winner 1547 points, a difference of more than 1300 points. He wasn't "Very close" as you say, simply mentioned but had no real shot of winning the award. There have probably been 10+ defensive players who came closer to winning it than him since he played. Not trying to be a dick, just pointing out there is no real need hyperbole.

One funny note, we actually did draft another D player who recieved Heisman votes....Rey Maualuga. Not that he was close at all, just kind of a funny anecdote that he actually receive Heisman votes.
