I actually agree with your comparison.  Merely pointing out that the players you mentioned weren't classified as DTs predraft either.
I think the reason most are considering McDowell as a DT is because he mostly played at DT. He did play at DE too, but weren't most of his snaps from the interior?
He might have been more effective as a DE though. But do most teams use 270+ lb DEs in a 4-3? Haven't most of the fans actually wanted a smaller, faster edge rusher than the big trees the Bengals seem to prefer in DE?

Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
