What was done for a backup is fine, but I was referencing good enough planning for a starting interior lineman. For a starting interior lineman, I'd like a draft pick that is Round 4 or earlier, and/or a FA that is under the age of 30 that has played the spot before in the NFL that he's being brought in to play.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

They really werent banking on Smith staying healthy were they?

It's a nice option but that couldnt have been without a backup plan in place.

Either way, at minimum, they have already handed him $700k, and potentially up to $1.75m. Both are enough that Mike Brown won't let him go without playing.

Mike Brown doesn't give signing bonuses to people who don't have a spot on the roster already.
He definitely has a spot on the roster.  His spot in the lineup might not be so certain.  But he's still learning the position so maybe he starts slow and picks it up from there.  Even then, you hope you don't have to rely on him.
