feeling good about this year's D...
#1
They say burfict is targeting a comeback in week 3 of the preseason. That guy is the edgiest defender we have had since fulcher. His attitude and toughness is what that D needs to get us through those late season wars with pitt and balt. Mj is back so is atkins, iloka is maturing, we should have interchangeable parts at corner with dennard, dre, adam jones, and hall and watch out for dunlap...14 sacks for him? We have some depth at lb now and along the d line. Top 5 D again. I could go on about the offense too, but the ginger ninja worries me greatly...

Marvin Jones was wanting to come back for the patriots last year. We all seen how that turned out.

Plus Rey's hurt. Here's to hoping they make very, very, very, very, very, very, very sure that he is ready before they put him back on the field.

The thing was we were told that was going to happen. How does a player go from "Will return by week 5" to "Season ending-IR"?

I'll tell you why, Jones went and saw another doctor in North Carolina about his foot.

But here's the kicker, he practiced with the team twice. Once during the BYE week and once before the New England game.

Just blows me away he had to go to another doctor to know he wouldn't be able to play on that foot rather than the medical staff here.

D-line and DBs looking very good.

LB corps is a mess.  Burfict is still a question.  Now Maualuga is injured.  No other LB has looked very good at all.  I think Lamur will improve since last year was his first as a LB, but he still needs to step up his game quite a bit to be a really good LB.  Hawk could turn out like Terrance Newman or he could be another Danieal Manning.  everyone else is nothing more than back up quality.  Dawson gets a lot of love around here, but he was still just th 99th guy taken in the draft.

Third round comp technically Wink
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

You are right.  I was just thinking "our fourth draft pick"

You left out a few details.  Jones first injured his ankle in February at Dalton's passing camp.  He was placed on nonfootball injury list before training camp and then the PUP list.  He was cleared to practice for training camp and injured his ankle for a second time.  Cleared to practice two weeks later and broke his foot which required surgery.  He practiced once after Week 4 coming back from foot surgery.  Practiced the next week and re-injured the ankle for a 3rd time.  Then he was sent to see a specialist.

So which ankle injury do you think required surgery?  The first, second, or third ankle injury?

Maualuga will be back.  How much practice does he really need at this point in his career.  The extra reps will be good for the 2nd string LB's.   Hawk is starting his 10th season, that could be a concern, but he's in a system that needs him right now, so I am sure he is playing with renewed energy.  Rey will perform and I agree that Lamur will be much improved this season.  Flowers is now more seasoned and ready to break out.  Burfict could be back by the 3rd Pre-season game or maybe later down the road.  I would be more concerned about his concussions than his knee IMHO.

As with every team,  players get banged up and new ones come along.  Lets just sit back and see how training camp and the pre-season games unfold.  We'll know more in a few weeks.  Rock On

True in regards to the newbies getting reps but the age old" Rey looked great when he played" is getting old

Who knows. Maybe he shouldn't have been cleared for practice. Our medical staff really isn't the best in the world.

Who knows?  I thought you did. So you don't know if the medical staff treated his injuries 100% appropriately or if they missed the diagnosis on the first visit. Yet with your complete lack of knowledge of his diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan you're inexplicably able to judge he received inadequate care. Miss Cleo, is that you?

You do realize he was cleared to practice coming back from foot surgery when he injured the ankle for the 3rd time?  And the 3rd and final ankle injury prompted the referral to a subspecialist?

Atkins was the 120th, Burfict wan't drafted. Dawson will contribute, he fits what we do very well

And Burfict wasn't drafted at all. I think Dawson will emerge and Maualuga will not be missed that much. I sure hope that is the case.

I like that Dawson's strength is his instincts and that he rarely, if ever, takes a "false step".  The Bengals LB corps doesn't need the guy that can score off the charts at the combine (Moch) but a guy that can play solid, assignment-based football.

I'm pretty stoked about the DL and DBs, but the LB corps still scares the heck out of me. I just don't see any team winning championship football, with holes in the middle of the field.

We should find out what the D is really about, early on. Rivers and Wilson will certainly do their best to exploit the LBs in coverage.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Great logic. Margus Hunt was 53rd. Dontay Moch was 66th. A lot more guys were drafted in the 3rd or later rounds that don't contribute at all than guys that actually play a role and/or end up being good rookies. Can't really assume he'll be a contributor because Atkins/Burfict without also using the logic that he won't because Hunt/Moch. In reality, none of our past players have anything to do with Paul Dawson. His draft position, however, does show at least something. How many guys taken at the end of the 3rd round are forced to start and actually do a good job in their rookie year? I'd put money on not too many.

Atkins and Burfict have NO bearing on what our players will do. It actually sucks that Burfict ended up being so good because now part of our fanbase always assumes every single player we draft or have come in as a UDFA will be a big time contributor because Vontaze happened.

I agree with this for the most part, we just have to really hope the DL and DBs play at a high enough level to mask the LB weakness as it has in the past. The big issue I see is that if Burfict isn't out there, this is easily the worst LB corp we've seen in Cincinnati since 2011. I don't think having holes this big is good for a team contending for a title, there are a lot of questions here. Is Dawson as good as half the message board thinks (especially as a rookie)? Will Burfict come back earlier than most believe? Will Hawk be mediocre or better for us?

I think if the answer is "yes" for at least 2 of those 3 questions, we'll be fine. I just don't know how likely each of those is.

According to reports Geno is "ruining practice", as PG put it, because he is getting into the backfield so fast he's blowing up play after play. I'd say he's back. MJ is back. Rey M will be fine, and Hawk is reportedly better than he was after getting his ankle cleaned out. I expect a top 5 defense this year....

It is great to hear Geno may be back to the old Geno.

It stinks as it appears our interior OL is getting beat badly. Is it Bodine, Boling and Zeitler? If so, this is a mixed bag of news for me.

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.
