Running game
#1
A few weeks ago in one of the game day threads, someone asked the question: When is the last time a Bengals running back ran for more than 100 yards in a game against someone other than the Cleveland Browns?

I went back through the game logs for the answer. It was at the very beginning of the 2015 season. Gio went off on the Chargers. It’s absolutely disgusting that aside from one of the worst teams in the history of the NFL, we haven’t had a 100 yard rusher in nearly two and a half seasons. How do they reconcile this with the lack of changes needed to improve?

Are you serious? This doesn't sound right. Friggen Brad can roll for a 100yds against the Browns. Why hasn't this been addressed? How come nobody informed me of this? Damnit! I need a pick me up. Anyone got any Cialis?

Meh, just have ya a couple of triple Gin and Tonics, starting at kickoff.  You'll sleep right through the ugly ending.

I usually start with the first one around noon (give or take an hour, usually take) because anyone who drinks before noon (when not on vacation) is considered an alcoholic. LOL. I however (never in my right mind) try to drink responsibly every day! Wait...  Shocked

Damn Bengals!

Right there (bolded) is all the reason you need to justify drinking before noon on Sundays, especially during the season.

Don't worry about the lack of a running game, the Bengals don't have anybody to block anyway.

How about the Bengals don't have a running game, because the OL is unable to block anybody?  It's not about the running backs, they are all talented players.  If they can't even stop defenders from getting into the backfield as the backs are getting the handoff, there is really no chance of them getting anything good from a play.

I put this squarely on the shoulders of the QB, Andy Dalton. It's so obvious he has to go ! We could bring in any one of 3 or 4 dozen QB's and all will be well, trust me.

That was my question and I thank you for the answer. I’m not surprised, however. Let’s discuss why this is the case. It might be easy to blame this on Jeremy Hill or Giovani Bernard but I don’t think that’s the issue. Once again it comes down to play in the trenches and I don’t think the offensive line run blocks well at all.

No doubt. I put zero blame on the running backs. This offensive line is atrocious. Poor coaching is obviously a major contributing factor. Our skill players didn’t forget how to play football overnight. We just can’t run even the simplest of plays because everything goes to shit as soon as the ball is snapped.

Defenses lick their chops and salivate when looking at tape of our OL.

It is not on the RB's at all.

If they fire Marvin but promote PA to HC ?

Then I am cashing in and taking a few years off. Believe PA is a big part of the problem.

Well, zero blame on RB's is a little excessive. Specially for the likes of Hill who only averages just over 2yds per carry the last few years. Bernard still seems shocked at times from the blow during the Bengal Pitt playoff game in 2015 and then with Mixon being a rookie? Well, he hasn't tapped his abilities yet. So, I would pass some of the blame to our RB corps. Our Bengals losses are definitely a team effort.

What? It is all due to the line. First it was Dalton and now it is the RB. No it is 100% due to a shitty Oline coach and the shitty players he strongly advocates to draft. I will be amazed but not surprised if Alexander isn't fired at the end of the year with Marvin

That would be the pipe dream that many of us are hoping for.

A normal person couldn't.  But Mike ain't normal, so there you have it.

In all honesty, I don't care if we ever have a 100 yard back, as long as we have an effective running game.  As long as we have balance in the offense and all the backs are around or north of 4 yards a carry, I'm happy with it.  Just keep the chains moving and I'll be fine. There's no difference between 3 backs carrying 8 times each for 40 yards each compared to 1 back with 20 carries for 100 yards and 1 back with 4 carries for 20 yards.  It's still 120 yards at a clip of 5 per carry.

That is the entire key, right there.  I've decided to focus all of my disgust and frustration with this team where it belongs, on the Owner/GM.

People blame players?  Nope, it's Mike's fault.  No one gets onto this team, without his approval.

People blame coaches?  Nope, it's Mike's fault.  He has final say on any coaches employed by the team.

People blame team management?  Yep, it's all Mike's fault.  He is the team management.

This approach has made watching the games, conversing on here, and generally being a fan of the Bengals a much saner experience.  Every time something bad happens, I just say to myself, "Dammit Mike!".
