Don't like what I heard about him to be honest. Hopefully he isn't an idiot and plays to the defenses strengths. We have 5 pro bowl caliber players it should be an easy job to turn around this unit.

On the cincyjungle story, sounds like we were high on Austin's defense consistently forcing turnovers; Lions finished 3rd in the league this season.....

That sounds like he's been training to be a Bengals coach and is perfect for the job.

In the smallest bit of fairness to him, his defense was 3rd in takeaways, which is leaps and bounds above the Bengals' t-30th. (That was one thing that became obvious Paulie G couldn't coach, as he lost Zimmer's players and started drifting away from simply copying his scheme, the turnovers plummeted.)

Those stats are very similar to Breshnahan's 2005 stats.

Dont know much about the guy but his rankings don't look great.

Austin is a secondary whisperer; our CB that converted to a SS (Quandre Diggs) was looking like a pro bowler towards the end of the year; y'all already know about Slay and Quin.

A Secondary whisperer? I like the sound of that. Get him working with the emerging star in WJ3 and the much improved Dennard and they could have one of the best duos in the league.

Go look at his first year in Detroit, #2 overall defense. They kept slipping year after year because each year they lost more talent each year. I prefer Fangio but I believe Austin is a good fit. He deploys more of a man based coverage scheme which is what our defense would be best at, at least imo. I think that was Guenther's main problem. He never adjusted his scheme to our players.

The defense is Oakland is basically what held the team back the last couple years. Why does everyone act like that would be a good hire? If the guy was a defensive genius you'd think he could have worked with his D coordinator to fix it right? If we are going to knock Austin for a regressing defense why not Del Rio too?

I see what you're saying.....but he had some pretty good defenses over the years as a coordinator.  That's what I'm basing it off of.  By this rationale, we'd have to say Marvin wasn't a good defensive coordinator either.
