Larry Zierlein was the Line coach in Pittsburgh. Former UC coach. Who was also the asst line coach at Arizona under Goodwin

His guys were good at both run blocking and pass blocking in his time with the Cards.

I went ahead and looked through all his years with Pittsburgh, Indy and Arizona. Here's his rankings in rush yards, yards per carry and his sacks allowed:

Steelers:
2007:   3rd- 7th-47 sacks (9.4 attempts/sack)
2008: 23rd-29th-49 sacks (10.3 attempts/sack)
2009: 19th-16th-50 sacks (10.7 attempts/sack)
2010: 11th-18th-43 sacks (11.1 attempts/sack)
2011: 14th-11th-42 sacks (12.8 attempts/sack)

Colts:
2012: 22nd-26th-41 sacks (15.3 attempts/sack)

Cardinals:
2013: 23rd-27th-41 sacks (14.0 attempts/sack)
2014: 31st-32nd-28 sacks (20.3 attempts/sack)
2015:  8th-12th-27 sacks (20.8 attempts/sack)
2016: 18th-12th-41 sacks (15.8 attempts/sack)
2017: 30th-31st-52 sacks (11.5 attempts/sack)

Not that great, now that I go in-depth. But...

1. You have to consider that Ben and Luck are "hang around and make plays" types, and that leads to more sacks. Arians encouraged it, and it was said that the move from Arians to Todd Haley was to preserve Ben's career. The lines in AZ have been better at protecting the QB, but I heard they dealt with numerous injuries this year.

2. As bad as the sack numbers look for Goodwin, his lines have had better sack rates than the 2017 Bengals in 6 of the last 7 years, with the only exception being this year with all the injuries. 2014 thru 2016 were significantly better.

3. These were some of the better offenses in football. Goodwin's lines were part of teams that had an overall record of 115-60-1 (.656) with a 6-6 playoff record, 4 division titles, 2 AFC titles, and an NFL championship. He's been a part of 1 losing season (7-8-1) in 11 years as an o-line coach. His lines have paved the way for 6 top 12 offenses.

4. Rushing wise, he's had 6 finishes inside the top 20 in YPC. Paul Alexander did that 1 time in the last 12 years.

To sum it up, we could probably do better, but we could certainly do much worse. I'm not quite as hyped as I was initially, but he'd be a solid hire, IMO.

Those numbers are not impressive to me. Sure things happen like injuries you cannot control, but I am not so sure I can get excited if they hire him.

Yeah, these numbers don't fire me up as much as i thought they would. Still better than PA especially in run blocking
but it would probably be a good idea to keep looking after seeing this. I think i got caught up in 2015 when the Cards
O-line was really good. Maybe he could do that in a few years though who knows?

I'd be very happy with Goodwin. I like the idea of having a line coach who's also been an offensive coordinator. I think he and Bill Lazor could potentially work very well together.

To be fair, those rankings are skewed: the Cardinals have had nothing but utter shit on their line since Arians got there, ESPECIALLY in pass blocking.

The fact he was able to get what he did out of them, says it all.

Don't be so quick to pass judgment.. This guy may not measure up to a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.. That's a pretty high bar for people who enjoy a good poke in the eye with a sharp stick.. You just never know about these things.

But Palmer is not mobile enough to help them out with the sacks.

Harold Goodwin is actually one of the names I had on my list of candidates to replace Marvin, so I'd be pretty content with landing him as the O-line coach.
