Earlier today they said there were only 13 people killed. From the way it looked in the video I don't see how there were not many times that many dead. The fireball was hundreds of feet high.

I agree the death toll will likely go up, but it might stay lowish since this happened at night.

Unfortunately, a similar explosion happened in Texas city in 1947 with hundreds of people on the dock of a ship with 230 tons of fertilizer burning on board, when it exploded.  15 hours later another ship carrying thousands of tons of fertilizer had caught fire and blew up as well.

My guess is whatever blew up in China was fertilizer or a similar chemical.

They said they could see the explosion from space.

During WWII there was a huge explosion in Port Chicago outside of San Francisco that killed hundreds of sailors who were loading bombs onto ships.

Here's another video of it from an even closer PoV.

The news is reporting 55+ Dead, 700+ injured and now confirming reports that thousands have been displaced. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/aug/14/china-explosions-thousands-seek-refuge-55-killed-tianjin-blasts

The second explosion was equal to 21 tons of TNT (equivalent to a low yield nuclear detonation), and the second is estimated to be in the 150 tons of TNT to 3000 tons of TNT yield range according to some reports.
