Bengals said this after signing Buffalo Bills Left Tackle and Linebacker and Eifert. Team said these moves meant they had no money to keep Bodine, Hill or Pacman. Team said they could address Bodine gone early in draft, which they did. Team also said after draft they can cut one or two players to get under the salary cap, which they will. I can think or a couple of higher paid Bengals that team is getting kind of frustrated with who would get team under the cap, plus it seems like their replacements added to team last 2 months. So coaches and players are having practices today on Monday after the draft. The additions have been made, but salary cap demands that now subtractions be made of one or two higher paid veterans. One player will have fans on here screaming if cut, but his situations put him in with players team can't count on in games. Anyway, veteran cuts are coming to be followed by fans angry on this site. They must get back under the cap. They did get Buffalo's Left Tackle and Linebacker, but the price tag forces somebody out the door. After last 2 losing seasons, the team said changes were a coming. Team said they would make cuts to get under cap probably soon after the draft, and draft is now over.

The Bengals are still $18 mill under the cap, projected to still have ~$10 mill after the draft picks are signed.
They don't "have" to make cuts to retain Dunlap/Atkins.
However, I think Vincent Rey and/or MJ should be on alert once Burfict is back from suspension.
Removing Rey would free up nearly $2.75 mill and MJ would free up nearly $5 mill.
DL right now:
Dunlap, MJ, Hubbard, Willis
Atkins, Baker, Billings, Glasgow, Brown
LBs right now:
Burfict*, Brown, Jefferson, Vigil, Evans, Lawson, Rey
With the team likely to use 3-safety looks, I don't see a reason to keep seven LBs when Burfict is back.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

No hurry to cut anyone. They almost never get contract extensions done until right before or during training camp.
However if they already know who they are going to release they may let him go in order to give him a better chance to sign elsewhere.
Or they may not release any vets at all.
Michael Johnson is the only one who would really save them enough money to let go. But he saves them less than $5 million in cash and cost $1.125 in dead cap space.
LaFell would save them $4 million in cash but cost $1 million of dead cap space. But I don't see them letting go of LaFell until we have seen the other young WRs in preseason. We have a lot of good looking prospects at WR, but Ross, Malone, Core, and Erickson have not proven anything yet.

It would have made sense to cut MJ and Vinnie and use the money to sign a quality RT free agent.
I hope Pollack can coach up Fisher.
I agree that cutting LaFell right now is risky.
Hard to judge the quality of our WRs based upon last year's debacle on o-line.

Even after dead money is deducted, cutting MJ would gain 3.875M, and Vincent Rey 2.75M. If you put those together, it's 6.625M. That could go a long way toward securing the extension of one of our stars, or even picking up a solid, proven veteran RT, as there are sure to be a few looking for new homes come the first wave of cuts.

If you cut Vinnie Rey and replace him with a rookie you are saving about $2 million, but making the team weaker.
So is it worth $2 million to make the team worse at LB? He has ended up playing well over half of our defensive snaps for four straight years ('17-60%, '16-54%, '15-67%, '14-83%)

We traded Bene Benwikersomething for a 7th round pick last year.
I dont expect any significant cuts any time soon. If anything we take our time evaluating and try to trade someone away.
Once it gets close to week 1 though. I cant remember the rule how many years. But vested veterans contracts become guaranteed if they are on the initial roster.

totally agree, saving 2 million to cut a veteran that can and has played all LB positions and has stayed healthy and dependable.. not a smart move

I'm just going on what Bengals Front office said. They said they didn't really have the money for the Buffalo Left Tackle and The Buffalo Linebacker and resigning Eifert. They said the could find the money buy not keeping Bodine, Hill and Pacman, and cutting a contract player after the draft in early May. According to Front Office they will have to find ways to pay these Buffalo Bills players and Eifert. Front Office said they could not afford Bodine or a free agent center but would take a center early in draft, and they did. Bengals Front office said they don't have the money to pay these Buffalo players and Eifert, but said they will have the money after they let Bodine, Hill, Pacman go and cut another veteran or two in early May after the draft. So for all the people saying Bengals are doing great on salary cap, that is opposite what Bengals Front Office has said on Bengals.com. after Free Agent signings. The word then was somebody has to go in May to pay these free agents and get salary cap where Bengals want it for other moves. So don't be surprise if a big name gets cut in May, maybe somebody that has not been able to be counted on week to week as Bengals make changes. They held true to letting Bodine, Hill and Pacman go and drafted a Center early, so no reason for me to think they won't hold true on cutting a veteran player in May as they also said. Just don't be surprised if it happens. I can think of a couple big money names. One wouldn't make too many sad to see him go since he never panned out yet. Another would make some fans very angry in spite of the fact he plays in only about half the Bengals games which is frustrating ownership some. Just don't be surprised if Front Office follows through with the rest of what they said after free agents were signed.
Now maybe some of you are right and that Bengal.com Home Page News Story after first weekend of free agency is completely wrong, but it has been completely accurate on everything else up to now. Bodine, Hill, Pacman were not made an offer. They did replace Bodine via a top draft pick. I have to feel the part about still needing payroll cut after draft in May could also be accurate.

Alright guys, V. Rey's cash payout is 2.75M, on a 2.25M salary and 500K for being there bonuses. That is close to 3M, pretty much what a lower-mid tier starter makes. FWIW, I've traditionally been a fan of V. Rey. However, a time comes when it's time to realize he isn't ever going to be a starter. He's a fantastic player, in the way that he's always in great position to make a play, but he just don't have enough ass to take on a Guard and stuff in the hole. In coverage? He plays where he's supposed to, but get's outmanned by TEs.
I can definitely see your point about the number of snaps he's played, but are they really meaningful? Or, are they more the "better a backup than no one" type of duty? And, don't forget that Brandon Brown is now a member of the team.

Disagree that Hubbard is MJ's replacement, at least currently. Hubbard is taking the roster spot vacated by Chris Smith...

Austin is going to determine who stays and who goes. It's going to be merit-based. We're in win now mode. No more F'ing around.
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

I don't see Michael Johnson getting cut this year.
he's found his niche sliding to a 3 or 5 technique on 3rd downs.
Glasgow and Billings can't do what MJ does.
plus the locker room needs professionals like Johnson to set a positive culture
for these incoming rookies like Hubbard and Brown.
outside of Dunlap no one on the dline has the radius to be able to knock down passes
or disrupt passing lanes
MJ will be a specialist on 3rd downs.

Kyle Cooke, Willie Anderson. Rudi Johnson, Deltha Oneal, and PJ Dawson all disagree.
