Hobson Article on Chris Carter
#1
I will say this of Carter:  I really liked what I saw, in albeit very limited action, against the Giants.  With MJ down, let him have some snaps against Tampa's #1s on third down.  I like the idea of a different guy rushing the passer.  By this, I mean that MJ, Clarke, Hunt, are all long, powerful guys.  Those types of guys never do much against a guy like Whitworth, but if Whit and Andre struggle with anything it is the smaller, faster rush end.

I like the flexibility a guy like Carter provides in that they could attack the opposing OTs with what they have struggle stopping.

Nice article, Butch.

Remember when Margus Hunt looked like a man among boys, in preseason?

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

He's looked pretty good to me every time he's played in the regular season.

I think he (Margus Hunt) has a hard time making the team if he can't get on the field this preseason and show against 1st and 2nd level talent.

Yes, I remember seeing Margus get three sacks in an NFL preseason game.  I think if healthy, he can be a force.  One thing I would advise him on though:  stop telling people that it was Steve Smith Sr. that injured your ribs.  He gives up about a foot and 100 lbs to you.  I know he is a tough little booger, but still....

Good article. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Carter on Monday. Hopefully he can make the team, give us a little something different on defense, and get us some much need pressure and sacks.

Yeah.  Third round miss.  Bears no resemblance to this FA.

It's the same story. Undersized pass rusher performs well in pre season, possible pass rush specialist?

It typically ends the same way.

Hobspin implies we're keeping only 6 LBs.

Burfict
Rey M.
V. Rey
AJ Hawk
PJ Dawson
So I guess it's between Flowers & Carter? What happens to Lamur?

I really think we need to keep Nico Johnson.

Yes, we have a lot of LBs who would look good as a 6th linebacker.

Not really a position you want to make room on your roster for though.

I'd just keep Burfict, Maualuga, Rey, Hawk, Dawson and Lamur.

Flowers is an exciting young guy, but it will be difficult to crack that top 6.

Johnson looks good too, but we just have too many solid back up LBs right now.

I hope we don't keep 7 linebackers, because we have so much talent in other areas that we need to keep more.

Yeah, I'm hoping and think we need to keep Johnson too.

The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

I agree in principle. DeShawn Williams and Troy Hill need to stick. But Trevor Roach is the only guy in the LB room who has any PS eligibility. I could be wrong. If we keep 6 and 2 get hurt . . . we're kind of screwed (again). And with Burfict and Rey M. being so injury prone, I'm not sure I'd risk keeping only 6. I guess having so much talent is a good problem to have, but ...

There is a good chance that Burfict is on PUP.

Maualuga, Vinnie Rey
Hawk, Dawson
Lamur

It is probably between Nico Johnson & Flowers.

Whichever the 6th LB it is will probably be cut when Burfict comes back after the PUP.

The Bengals won't keep a tweener.

Very little risk involved this time around, though, which makes this very different.  Maybe you catch lightning in a bottle.

if not, then no big deal.  Feels very different to me.

I don't think so at all.  I guess we will see what the coaches think in a couple weeks.

That's just it.  Moch was an athletic freak, but didn't know how to play the position.  Carter posted some pretty respectable numbers at the combine himself, but seems to have a knack for getting by bigger OTs and getting pressure.  That is EXACTLY what this team needs.  Not every OT struggles with smaller, faster rush ends, but the ones that do....what Bengal would fill that roll?  Every other guy are like clones of each other.  Not saying Clarke is as good as Dunlap, but they are all of the big-and-long ilk.  Carter would be a different tool in the toolbox.
