I got your back OP.

For those poking fun at this because of Vigil, you do realize tandem means 2? Nothing wrong with suggesting VB and Brown might be just that.

Yeah, except even in their own division.

TJ Watt/Bud Dupree

Suggs/Mosely

So, in their own division they would be 3rd.  But yeah, they may be be the best tandem in the NFL.

That would be another fail.  Dupree and Suggs are edge guys.

Which one is TJ Watt or Bud Dupree better than? You do realize you just tried to claim they were both better LBs than Brown or Burfict don't you?

Suggs was great, but getting a little long in the tooth and pretty much just a sack specialist on a 3-4 defense. CJ Mosely is most likely on par with Burfict.

Crazy thing is dude missed the one team in the AFC North that could be argued to best. Jamie Collins and Joe Scobert are bad men. Hell throw in Christian Kirksey

Never liked Rivers and really never got the hype. The only LBer that I liked that Marvin drafted(key word) is Thurman. He could have been something else. Burfict, i wish I could find the post but I was convinced he was going to be our best defensive player when we picked him up. Just wish he would try not to get suspended so much and take better care of himself. Seems like he's knocking himself out for at least a couple plays every game.

Can't we argue that Lawson is on pace to be just as good as Watt and Mosley, if not better. He's tech a LBer.

No he's not.

That is the official position designation according to the NFL. That's also why Carl Lawson had 16 tackles in 16 games and 0 Pdef. He's a DE.

Well I be damned. Thought he was listed as a LBer last year.

This.

1098 snaps on defense and another 81 on special teams.

He sat a total of ten plays on defense all year.

Brown is okay. He’s not spectacular, but he’s not bad. He’s a step up from Minter, at least on paper. I know he’s the league leader in tackles, but tackles are a hard stat to gauge because teams adjust them after watching film. Buffalo is notorious for giving guys a credit for a tackle if they’re near the ball. The beat guys are the ones who reported that.
You can always trust an dishonest man to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to look out for.

He is the NFL tackles leader so the league statistics office is the one deciding how many tackles there were.

Here's an idea! Why don't we watch the guy play a few games before we before we rush to judgement.

This nails it.  Brown will not be the nickel LB, which is our real base formation, and is set nearly 2/3rds of the time.  Brown will still have to cover some in base, and while he is not the fastest he is very instinctual.  I think the Bills just didn't want to offer him a long term deal for the position he plays without the coverage ability of some of the faster LBs in the league.

That being said, he is a tremendous upgrade over the aforementioned Minter and Maualuga.  He will also be very helpful in short yardage defense.

The guy that I would love to see step up is Evans.  He has all the athletic ability and I think he has flashed some of his ability when he gets in to the flow of a game.  Vigil is as good as those around him.  He can't be "the guy" but can be a solid piece around better talent.

It is, still, in my estimation, our biggest question mark.

Carl Lawson is listed as a LB on http://www.bengals.com/team/roster.html
He was also listed as backup SAM on ESPN's depth chart http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/cin/formation/4-3-defense
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

He also played some off the ball linebacker toward the end of the year when everyone was hurt.

I'm confused, why would you list two edge rushers in a 3-4 defense and compare them to two linebackers in a 4-3 defense? Maybe you sir, should stop playing Madden and think that you can switch any LB'er out with any other LB'er and their ratings won't change.

If anyone says that the best linebacker tandem in the league, true linebackers, don't reside in Jacksonville then they haven't watched any amount of football outside of on an Xbox or Playstation.

I'm guessing with Austin, if he follows his philosophy that he used in Detroit, then we won't be in nearly as much nickel coverage that we were in under Guenther. He used more of a 4-3 base set and mixed in varied looks. I actually really really really like Austin as a coach and I think he is finally going to be the guy that uses players in todays NFL as they should be used.

I think we will end up seeing a lot more 3 "safety" looks where Shawn Williams or Illoka are in their specifically to take away the tight ends that have killed us for 20 years now constantly. This will allow Bates to roam like he was drafted for and it lets us put more speed on the field instead of some of these slower linebackers we love to play so much.

This could all be a big giant wish of mine as well and we could just be the normal Bengals, hell I don't know. But after doing a little more digging in on Austin when we hired him, I really liked what we did with a team that had far less talent than he did in Detroit.

Actually this was already refuted upthread. Brown is a three down LB and Buffalo used him exactly in that way.
