46 Man Roster – Week One
#1
I was looking at the depth chart, trying to figure out who doesn't dress. It's not an easy task

What I think I know:

CJ Uzomah – Why would they dress him? IMHO he's lucky to be on the 53.
Derron Smith – Played pretty well in preseason, but they have 3 safeties, plus Hall
Chirs Lewis-Harris - I think they dress Shaw for STs.

Here's what I don't know.

MJ or Hardison – It depends on MJ's readiness.
Little or Alford – this would be a tough call to make. I'd guess they'd dress Little, but could see it going the other way, too.

That still leaves 2 more guys to not dress. What are your thoughts?
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

I'm still flabbergasted that they have inactives. I mean what is that practice squad thing all about? Oh, well.

Uzomah
Smith
Lewis-Harris
Alford
Little (as Burkhead can play the slot and we'll have Eifert who can line up at WR in a pinch too)
Thompson or Hardison
MJ or Clarke or Hunt (depends on MJ's health)

With MJ hurting I think Clarke or Hunt will be active.

Not dressing Rex would surprise/shock me.

Hardison must of really impressed you, if you have him dressing over Clarke and Hunt. As I think about it, I'd be in favor of it, too.

Uzomah and Alford on offense.

Three of the ten defensive linemen.
Two of the ten defensive backs.
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.

My guesses for those not of 46

Uzomah
Lewis-Harris
Smith
Clarke or Hunt or MJ [Just don't need all 3]
Hardison
Alford
Little

Rex makes the 46 over Alford and Little due to versatility.

Quite frankly it should be Peko!

So each week one of Brandon Tate and Mario Alford will be inactive. They both fill the same role and won't see much play time in the same game.

Rex Burkhead may be inactive. Give him a 50% chance each game. He has looked good in the slot, so there's a chance he remains active simply for his receiver duties.

CJ Uzomah is an easy inactive all season.

Jake Fisher may be inactive for the early season. Although our depth on the Oline is pretty slim right now.

Clarke or Hunt will likely be inactive as long as Carter and MJ are healthy.

Either Vinny Rey or PJ Dawson will likely be inactive, which is ridiculous.

Derron Smith and Chris Lewis Harris will round out the 7 inactives.

My best guess would be:
Mario Alford
CJ Uzomah
Jake Fisher
Margus Hunt
PJ Dawson
Derron Smith
Chris Lewis Harris

I'm looking mostly at historical inactives. They very rarely dress all 6 linebackers. I hope they find space for PJ to remain active because I think he's an incredible player.

The problem is I don't see him getting much playing time other than someone getting injured. You have your starters in Rey, Rey and Lamur. Your first off the bench in Hawk, and your pass rush specialist in Chris Carter.

Maybe they can inactive both Hunt and Clarke, and leave Dawson active, using Carter as a down lineman.

That would make the inactives:
Mario Alford
CJ Uzomah
Jake Fisher
Margus Hunt
Will Clarke
Derron Smith
Chris Lewis Harris

Right now we just have way more than 46 guys worthy of dressing. They really need to get rid of this stupid ass rule.

Greg Little (I think they want Alford's speed for some reverse-type plays)
CJ Uzomah
Jake Fisher
Hardison
Derron Smith
Chris Lewis Harris
PJ Dawson (somewhat as a motivational tool...nothing will be handed to you)

FWIW, I hate this "rule" as well. I would rather see guys like Uzomah, Smith, Hardison be dressed and get some game action as they go. Even if just for a few snaps. Break them in easy.

The reason the 46 rule is in place is to attempt to level the playing field for week to week injuries. Let's say we have a rash of injuries and only have 45 guys we can play, but our opponent is relatively healthy and has 52 guys they can play. They have an advantage of an extra 7 guys they can rotate in, so the 46 is there to give everyone room for injuries, which right now aren't as big of a deal but as the season goes on will be.

There is no way we would only have 4 true linebackers active.

There is also no way we would have a Jungle Noise thread without plenty of bias floating around.

My best guess:

Assuming MJ is ready

Uzomah
Lewis-Harris
Fisher
Alford
Smith
Hunt
Hardison

If MJ isn't ready

MJ
Uzomah
Lewis-Harris
Fisher
Alford
Smith
Hunt

I won't be surprised if Alford and Hunt are both active and do absolutely nothing though.

I'm going with...
Mario Alford
CJ Uzomah
Marcus Hardison
Will Clarke
Derron Smith
Chris Lewis-Harris

That leaves one more....
If they are looking to keep their best players active, then TJ Johnson would be inactive.
Traditionally though, Burkhead has been inactive as long as the top three RBs have been healthy.
And as others have pointed out, one LB has typically been inactive. I'd give the nod to Carter, but the Bengals kept Carter as a pass rush specialist for a reason. That might make Dawson inactive initially.

I'm betting it's between Johnson, Burkhead, Carter, and Dawson.

Since Boling could play emergency center and I'd like to see Burkhead, Carter, and Dawson used in some way, I'm going with TJ Johnson as the final inactive.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Hunt will dress and receive 20% to 30% of the snaps spelling Dunlap. They kept him now they have to get him snaps same with Will Clarke but Clarke has another year.

Dunlap can and will play more than that. More like 85 - 90% of the snaps for him.

No need for me to sugar coat it, Hunt isn't very good and Dunlap is an every down end. Hunt will play this year but it's not because he's a good football player, and he surely won't be seeing near 30% of Dunlap's snaps unless there's a serious injury.

I have no idea where you get your numbers that Hunt will play anywhere near 30% of defensive snaps. That's absurd. I feel like people hear that we run a defensive rotation and assume our guys are playing musical positions out there. Dunlap and MJ are every down guys when healthy.

Dunlap has played slightly over 70% of the snaps every year but last year when they had no one to back him up. Geno is a superstar but he only plays 70% of the snaps .

Dunlap played in over 87% of the snaps in 2013. 84% last year.

You can at least be realistic here instead of making shit up just to find a way to crowbar in a pro-Hunt argument into yet another thread.

Robert Geathers was hurt in 2013. No backup. Face it when they can rotate they do. Hunt will get plenty of snaps this year if he's healthy people might as well get over.
