I think the team has their eye on Tranquil out of ND.  I wouldn't be surprised if they picked up Ben-Burr Kirven as well.

Casual reminder that we're almost done with the 3rd round and only 5 off-ball LBs have been drafted so far, including the Devins.

That's how truly pathetic this LB class is this year. I was so sold on Bush because of how weak this class is.

I'm happy with Pratt as I think he was the 3rd or 4th best LB in the class, but that is mostly a testament to the class's weakness than anything else.

If we grab Coney, Cashman, Tranquill, Joseph or Wilson in the 4th round, I will say we got out of this draft about as well as we could have hoped at LB from this class since we missed out on the Devins.

We have 3 starters/significant role players in the first 3 rounds with way too many picks tomorrow.

Let's see what we do with them.

I still think there are some good lbs left.  I really like mack wilson and cashman.  I think tranquill has a nice cieling as well.  I think burr kirvin can be a coverage specialist later but dont know if he can play on 1st and 2nd down consistantly.  Now that we took pratt I would rule out vosean joseph as he is another guy that has physical traits but raw and his instincts seem poor.  I think pratt is gonna take a few years but hopefully im wrong and this kid becomes a steal.  We need him to be good.

Matt Miller loves this pick. He said he had a second round grade on Pratt and that he is one of the most complete linebackers in the draft. He said that the Bengals should be very happy that he fell to them in the 3rd and he gave the draft pick an A+. I think he is going to be a solid player for the Bengals and could play early. However, Mack Wilson still has not been drafted so there is a possibility that the Bengals could double up on LBs if he falls to them in the 4th.

If they were available, I think the Bengals would have taken them.

Unfortunately, once they were taken, there were no LBs worth taking in the 2nd round. Luckily, we got a good one in the third. I think we may go get another one in the 4th.

That's exactly right. Nobody knows. There have been a ton of round 1 busts in the same year(s) undrafted guys go on to probowls.
People forget these are all young men and prospects at best in most cases. None of them have NFL experience until the day they do and none of them are proven in the league.
Sometimes teams draft guys very few fans have even heard of and yet they go on to be really good players and on the flip side, big time college players often turn into busts before they even get their feet wet.
Something to keep in mind and Lap pointed it out is that the Bengals this year have a bunch of coaches who were coaching in college last year so they have the inside scoop on these guys that most teams do not this year.

All ACC, 100 or so tackles, blitzes well, can move from sideline to sideline....not too shabby in the 3rd. Good point about the college coaches Gramps. This could work to our benefit for at least 3 more years.

For those calling Pratt a project, yes he’s a converted safety but he’s had two years of LB experience and has done well. If people were in favor of Shawn Williams moving to LB (who has never played LB before), shouldn’t you be happy to get a big safety who has already played two years at LB? I think the Bengals found their new WILL.

Haven't watched a whole lot of tape yet, but from what I've seen so far he has trouble getting off blocks. If he sees any early play time it'll mostly likely be primarily in passing situations.

STRENGTHS
Germaine is an athletic linebacker with the cover skills needed, to be an every down linebacker. He has the size to play more than one linebacker position in any style of defensive scheme. He is an excellent tackler using the correct form and tackling “through” his opponent. Germaine is developing the instincts to become a dominant player with play making abilities. His cover skills are better than most LB’s and Safeties in this draft. He can be used to blitz, using his long arms to his advantage against running backs, H-Backs and Tight Ends who try to block him. Germaine has the biggest upside of any linebacker in this draft and I believe in a year or two he will be considered as one of the top players, in the NFL at his position.
CONCERNS
Germaine has moved around from position to position as he has grown into his body. Right now, he is succeeding on athletic talent and will need time to continue to develop the instincts and high football IQ needed to play at the level his talents suggest that he can play at.
TALENT BOARD ROUND 2.00
In years to come there is no doubt in my mind that teams will be kicking themselves for passing on Germaine in this draft. I will be surprise if he doesn’t, somehow sneak into the back half of the first round but then again, maybe I won’t. Some are going to suggest, because he didn’t run a blistering forty time that he doesn’t belong with the other more “media known” linebackers but his explosion to the play is excellent and his ability to cover is so much better than others in this draft that it surprises me that his play on film isn’t being talked about. Germaine has played safety, inside and outside linebacker. His ability to play against the run and shed blocks to make tackles is very good. He is stout against the run when used on the outside but what Germaine brings to the table is commitment to what he sees and burst to the play, making tackles all over the field. He has to work on his leadership, communication, and understanding of down and distance and situational football. Give him time, and he will be one of the best players on the field and a defensive player who makes plays.

Nothing wrong with having a rookie LB that only plays in passing downs especially in the 3rd Round.

The big risk for the upcoming season though is that we definitely need a couple backers to step up and improve. I think IF I were the Bengals and a veteran LB gets waived, I'd sign him for insurance.

People also seem to be writing off Jefferson already, which is not smart. Just because he didn’t play much last year doesn’t mean he won’t this one. Jefferson could be the WILL of the future, and Pratt could be the MIKE.
