Malone isn't a lock and Malone and Erickson aren't (in my opinion) ahead of Tate as a down by down receiver. There's a reason he and Willis were chosen to start last night; they deserved it by their practice and play in games this preseason. There's also a reason they pulled him so quick after the injury. He was on the sideline afterwards for a short time with an ice wrap on his knee, then nothing else (brace or crutches) after that. They're not going to risk him furthering the injury because they value his contribution in the upcoming seaon. If he was fighting for a roster spot, he more than likely comes back into the game.

Core has improved this preseason but he still doesn't offer as much physically or athletically as Tate does. If you don't think he's impressive (more than Core or at all) then i can't really do anything for you. You're focusing on things like separation and YAC when they don't amount to anything when you put a guy on the field and need him to make a catch on 3rd down or in the red zone. Tate has proven he can make contested/tough catches. Up until this year, Core hasn't shown anything of note while Tate has wowed plenty of people in practice and in games. He hasn't set the world on fire but Core hasn't even found the matches yet.

Last note; there's no way in hell you can stash Tate on the practice squad. None, nada, zip, zero, nil.

And his snap count on offense was inflated compared to a normal 5/6 due to injuries to most of the guys in front of him.  He played 65 snaps on offense the year before.

Malone is the only guy that can simulate what AJ can do in the offense and he's the only vertical threat we have until Ross and/or Green returns.  Malone's been running with the ones, too.  Honestly, a ton of guys have had time with the 1's.  You think Tony McRae is a lock?  If they're sending Tate to James Andrews for a second opinion, that doesn't indicate a minor injury.  Plus they had other WR's they needed to look at.  Core's been out there with the 1's, for Pete's sake.

If he can't get open, then he isn't going to get thrown the ball in real games.  You get that, right?  In preseason, the coaches are trying to get looks at specific players.  In the regular season, the QB is supposed to find the OPEN receiver, and that's not Tate.  Oftentimes on 3rd down, you have to pass it to a receiver short of the 1st down and they have to run for it.  He can't do that because the defender always drops him right where he makes the catch.   You're getting caught up in highlight reel grabs that are highlight reel grabs because of deficiencies in his game and are routine plays for other guys.

Core has outproduced Tate in the preseason.  He has the same number of catches and more yards on less targets.  No, they are not highlight reel plays, but they don't have to be when you can actually get open once in awhile.

Just as guys who have speed back the defense off, guys who are slow bring the defense up, because they don't have to respect the threat of a big play.  No DC or S is going to respect Auden Tate deep or a big Auden Tate catch and run.  That means more guys in the box, more blitzes, and more double teams on AJ, Boyd, etc.

Kid has great hands, but he's very limited due to his inability to get open.  He's not a good technical route runner, doesn't have short area quickness, and doesn't have long speed to force CB's to give him some cushion.  If he develops as a route runner, then we might have something.  But he's not there yet.

I would personally use the injury as an excuse to stick him on IR and see if his route running improves next year.  Every year, there are guys that people say will never make it to the PS that do, so I wouldn't be sure about that.  Kid has 4 catches for 35 yards on 12 targets in his career.  I don't see him as a must have for most NFL GM's.  He's a project player that would have to go to a new team and learn a new offense on the fly without the benefit of minicamp or training camp.

Assuming Green, Boyd, Ross, Erickson, and Malone are locks and Willis has played his way into the 6th spot, here's the stats of the guys fighting for the 7th spot...

Core=8 catches/9 targets, 85 yards, 10.62 YPC, 0 TD's, 5 1st Downs, 25 YAC
Tate=8 catches/11 targets, 68yards, 8.5 YPC, 1 TD's, 4 1st Downs, 8 YAC
Morgan=5 catches/8 targets, 63 yards, 12.6 YPC, 0 TD's, 3 1st Downs, 33 YAC
Bryant=5 catches/5 targets, 71 yards, 14.2 YPC, 0 TD's, 3 1st Downs, 9 YAC
Sharp=4 catches/7 targets, 42 yards, 10.5 YPC, 0 TD's, 2 1st Downs, 22 YAC

Ranking them by raw stats...

Catches=1(t).Core, Tate 3(t).Morgan, Bryant 5.Sharp
Yards=1.Core 2.Bryant 3.Tate 4.Morgan 5.Sharp
TD's=1.Tate 2(t).Core, Bryant, Morgan, Sharp
1st Downs=1.Core 2.Tate 3(t).Morgan, Bryant 5.Sharp
YAC=1.Morgan 2.Core 3.Sharp 4.Bryant 5.Tate

By average...
Catch %=1.Bryant 2.Core 3.Tate 4.Morgan 5.Sharp
YPC=1.Bryant, 2.Morgan 3.Core 4.Sharp 5.Tate
YPT=1.Bryant 2.Core 3.Morgan 4.Tate 5.Sharp
TD%=1.Tate 2(t).Core, Bryant, Morgan, Sharp
1st%=1(t).Morgan, Bryant 3.Core 4(t).Tate, Sharp
YAC/Catch=1.Morgan 2.Sharp. 3.Core 4.Bryant 5.Tate

The issue is that, sadly, it isn't like these guys are playing Core off the roster as position players.  He's equally if not more productive than all of them.  If we're talking about dropping Core for one of these guys, it's about potential, not production, and you can stash Tate's potential on IR.  Statistically speaking, though, Tate really isn't impressive, aside from the 1 TD.

Why are you assuming Malone is a lock?

Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

It's a play action heavy offense and he's the best healthy deep threat we have.  He spent a bunch of time with the 1's in TC and started the first 2 preseason games.  Better physical tools than Tate, Erickson, Core, Morgan, etc.

Where did you see they are sending Tate to Andrews for a second opinion?

If you are correct, Tate is either done for the year or on way to IR probably. I hope you are wrong, but if not Malone becomes a lock if he was not already in my opinion.

2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

Not sure if that's actually true or if it even matters.
Malone is fast but he's not exactly made a lot of deep catches (or hardly any catches for that matter).
Ross is back practicing now with 2 weeks before Game 1, so as long as he doesn't get hurt again before Game 1, I still see him ahead of Malone.
Willis isn't a slouch either when it comes to speed, so he and Ross can fill that deep threat role.
Also, that play-action deep threat won't really matter much if Dalton continues to underthrow deep receivers like he did with Malone in the preseason game.

I'm not saying that it's a guarantee that Malone won't make it but considering him a lock just because he's the fastest out of Tate, Erickson, Core, Morgan, etc. doesn't really make sense either.

Great point. Let's face it, he has a degree from ND and has made millions. It would be easy for him to say, no thanks to going through another grueling rehab.

I hope and pray for him he stays healthy in 2019. He deserves some injury luck.
