Surprise cuts
#1
Who do you think does not make the 53 man roster this year that may shock some people?

I'll go with Margus Hunt.

I think his age and lack of development and with MJ's return and the drafting of Hardison makes him a candidate.

It seems like this team very rarely makes veteran cuts - especially with players on decent sized contracts.

With that being said - I just don't see too many major surprise cuts, especially with the starting caliber guys. If there was one that I could see, it would be Gilberry, but I wouldn't count on it.

Good candidate, but I would hate to see someone like him get cut...
Jayson DiManche
Nico Johnson
Brandon Tate...which won't be a surprise if he stays again... Whatever

I hope I am wrong, and I want to be wrong, but I fear Marvin Jones might be that guy. Not a lot of talk about him as he recovers from his injury. Maybe that's good and all is well, but I just really worry that the combination of a year off and the injuries may change the player he was.

If and I say IF he comes back to form right before he left, that would be a bad move by the FO.

I hope its Tate. Alford is his replacement. I could also see Hunt. Just a loaded line and talent wise...he's expendable. My third candidate would be Burkhead. But one thing for sure-- glad Im not making those decisions.

I could see Hunt as well, but damn I would hate to see him catch on somewhere else and become a force.

The team is so deep there will be talent cut, so it's hard to see a real surprise. Hunt is a consensus name, hopefully he finds a way to reach some of his potential.

A lot of the names mentioned are very possible. I'll throw in few that are unlikely but they'd be actual surprises. Rey and Lamur are two vet LB's making around 2 and a half mil each. If one of them has a poor camp, Flowers continues to improve and another LB shines it's possible that one is cut. I'd rather they not, but don't rule it out. Another one could be Shawn Williams. I know Marvin gave him a vote of confidence in March, but it's still his job to go win one of the safety spots. I see him on everyone's depth chart, he's on mine to make the 53 but he's not that far from Hunt's situation really. He fits as a true box safety, but since Marvin likes balanced guys maybe a poor camp gives Ghee, Smith and others the backup gigs. I guess I'm seeing a lot more consensus locks on the board(s) than I thought given all the depth. These guys still need to go earn their jobs.

Ced Peerman could be gone. Bulkhead can play STs, and Terrell Watson is younger and beastlier.

Although Simmons does like continuity. You never know.
Today I'm TEAM SEWELL. Tomorrow TEAM PITTS. Maybe TEAM CHASE. I can't decide, and glad I don't have to.

I think Brandon Tate moves on this year. I predict that we will see a number of players get a chance at KR this preseason.

Obarski (spelling?) over Nugent. That would be a surprise.

Lol at talk of Hunt and MJ, no chance. People on the bubble are;

Peerman
Still
Flowers
Porter
DiManche
Tate

I'd argue none of them would really be surprises.

I'll go with the DE position as well:

Wallace Gilberry.

I think Hunt and Clarke improve greatly this year in training camp and the preseason. Gilberry was dreadful last year, and while it is true that he was asked to perform as more than just a situational pass rusher, leaving him more tired, the truth is he isn’t even really a great pass rusher.

When I think of a situational pass rusher, I think of a guy who is either so big he’s difficult to block or a guy so quick that he can run around players.

Gilberry is an average player in every regard, who was relegated to situational pass rusher because he is not good enough (Clearly) to have any additional snaps other than when he can just pin his ears back.

Hardison is more athletic, bigger and stronger than Gilberry and could be both a situational pass rusher from DE and DT.

We’d lose nothing from replacing Gilberry with Hardison, and we’d also to get to keep the high upside defensive linemen, Still, Clarke and Hunt, while holding onto the run stopping specialist, Sims.

I don't think anyone will be cut this year that would surprise me very much.

With how stacked some people think certain position groups are, there will definitely be threads with folks in complete shock when some of the JN overhyped favorites at LB or WR get cut. We seem to have a lot of LBs on the roster that get talked up around here, so it's almost guaranteed that at least one of them doesn't make the team. I've seen Flowers, Porter, and DiManche mentioned, and there will definitely be a thread saying how it was a terrible move when one of them is let go.

True Surprise - Leon Hall and before anyone flips out I'm a huge Hall fan and would love to see him have a couple good years left and finish here. But perhaps the injuries have taken to much of a toll ?

I agree with the Tate, Gilberry, and Hunt folks but not so sure they'd be much of a surprise. Tate and Gilberry in my mind need to be gone ! And if Hunt doesn't really crank it up in camp perhaps it's time to cut bait there as well ?

In the past the Bengals have been willing to trade a young player with potential for a need. I could see them doing it again with a D-Line player if it is a close call. Maybe trade for a veteran blocking TE.

I hope your wrong but cutting him makes sense. 10 million a year is a huge price for a guy who might not even play nickel.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Gilberry too is not going anywhere. Jay Hayes was gushing over his value during the Hardison press conference.
