When you give up positive yards on 1st down you have less obvious passing situations which limits Lawson's snaps, like the 49ers game. He was doubtful at the being of the week to play with a hamstring issue which is why he probably didn't play a ton yesterday.

The issue with Lawson is that he was injured A LOT in college...and guess what? He's been injured a decent bit as a Pro.

Before that it was Whitworth in 2006.

So the Bengals have only drafted 2 1st Team All-Pros since they drafted Chad Johnson in 2001, 18 seasons ago.

I actually started making an All-Pro stat post along the lines of the Pro Bowl one, but it's much harder to do since All-Pro is an AP thing rather than an NFL thing. Then combine that with having to then research the players by year drafted, and make sure I don't count duplicates... it was more work than I was willing to put in right now.

You'll never convince some people the Bengals draft bad. They'll say Pro Bowls don't mean anything. Yada yada yada.

You can look at drafts that were total flops for the Bengals over the past 5 years too. Like the Ced and Fisher draft.

Because I doubt it's all Tobin. The Bengals manage in a 5 headed committee. MB, Katie, Troy, Tobin, and ZT. Hard to say who actually makes the call.

Our coaches could just be really bad drafters.

Tell me a team who doesn't have flops. If you want talk about lack of free agency moves agreed but in the draft they have been solid.

On their draft days, I loved the AJ Green picked, liked the Eifert and WJIII picks. Not a fan of the rest. Would that be 1.5 out of 3?

I wouldn't call the last 5 years of drafting solid. Sure they've had some hits. But the misses outweigh them by a lot.

Then guys like Williams Jackson get ruined here by coaching instead of developing into a star.

I feel like hiring more scouts and a competent GM would help A LOT.

2016- William Jackson, Tyler Boyd, Andrew Billings
2017- John Ross, Joe Mixon Ryan Glasgow, Carl Lawson
2018- Jessie Bates and Sam Hubbard
BTW from 2018 the Jury is still out on Darius Phillips and Andrew Brown

Three heads of that hydra should be lopped off as they have zero skill at evaluating NFL talent. Mike Brown’s inept reign as GM/owner is probably the most compelling argument in sports of why you don’t run a professional sports organization staffed by family members who never played the game. The Reds braintrust is barely better in that respect. The Bengals pathetic scouting department/GM/management strategy has continually let them down. None of it will change until Mike passes control to Katie and maaaaybe she decides to bring people with brains in to run the football side of things. Troy is like Eric Trump, aka the dimwit of a laughable crew, so good luck if he gets any more decision making power.
Through 2023

Mike Brown’s Owner/GM record: 32 years  223-303-4  .419 winning pct.
Playoff Record:  5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season:  37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.

In fairness to Mixon, give him a line that can actually...oh I don’t know....block, and he is an Pro bowler and an A player.

Mixon is a "A" talent. Boyd is close. Ross is trending up.
But everyone else drafted since 2014 falls below A
And I just see too many draft picks still left
On the roster that are from "F" to "C"
And when a front office that doesn't use FA to acquire
"B" tier players .....that makes hitting your draft picks
All that more imperative.
The Bengals simply have to hit a higher % of draft picks
Cause of their approach to FA.

So people generally think you need elite players to win in the NFL...and your roster certainly needs some elite talent.

But, you need a lot of average talent, with very few 'bad' starters.

If you look at our roster now, we have probably 7-8 guys that grade out as Bad that are starting. That's why you lose in the NFL.

Look at the franchise QBs Tobin passed on.

This is the thing that frustrates me the most.

I know most of us like Andy and recognize his strengths. We know he's been playing behind a trash O line since Whitworth and Zeitler left. And yes, I remember the 2015 season, but that's 1 season out of 8.

Passing on some of the QBs that have been drafted after us in the last few years is pretty hard to swallow.

We've missed in the first round but drafted decent as the draft went on. Other than first round issues is say Tobin's drafting has been adequate. He has his hands tied in free agency though and that's the difference as it's all connected. Come into the draft with the line set with FA signings and you don't have to reach for a C for example. Being inactive in free agency can effectively make you worse at drafting.

And that's the thing. Without using free agency much, you have to nail draft after draft after draft...and can't really miss on 1st Round picks.

The model really takes near perfect execution to work.

Ahhh, but only two Bengals from the 2019 draft have no A's in their names. 2018 there were three. Three in 2017. Three in 2016. Three in 2015 and only 2 in 2014. So only 16 or the 56 drafted had no A's in their names..
Yeah, I know...Totally and completely irrelevant, but someone had to waste 10 minutes to come up with these completely irrelevant numbers and guess who that someone was.. I DID IT! Blame me for squandering a full ten minutes of my precious time. Maybe it was 9 minutes. Heck, it might have been 5 minutes or even less! The point being that there is no point. Proof that my zero theorem is still intact and it's all for nought..  Mellow
