Steelers loss among 5 worst offensive line performances we have seen in the PFF era

Of course it may be beneficial to hire people who kind of know how to coach them correctly, but one fantasy at a time..

Carolina one year went a ton of defensive lineman.

The issue with drafting all offensive lineman is likely 1 will be starting quality if we are lucky. Look at the impact this past draft made.

While we thought he was bad that was before we saw his replacement

The funny thing with Redmond is he'll likely play for MJ...and Price will never see time at Guard.

We need to just roll with Price at Guard and live with it.

Paul Brown put so much effort into offensive line composition and technique.  Directional blocking?  He invented it back in the 1940s.  The pocket for a quarterback to pass from?  He invented that too.  If you ever want to see genius in action I think going on YouTube and watching some of the 1950s and 1960s Cleveland Browns offensive line play might be a good idea.  Vince Lombardi invented the jet sweep 60 years ago and the blocking from his offensive linemen was sick.  Those guards and center could pull to either side, too.

I've been impressed with John Jerry whenever they bring him in to fill in. We have to at least look at getting him in the starting lineup.

Our scouting is just bad. They try to draft lineman high...the guys just don't develop.

Like Price. Ragnow is playing Center for the Lions and graded 74.6 on PFF. They just picked the wrong guy.

Of course Ragnow wasn't available when we took Price. Now James Daniels....

Because we traded picks with the Bills for Glenn.

Should have kept Whitworth, not traded for Glenn, and drafted Ragnow.

Well if you want to go down that rabbit hole:

We should have kept Zietler and Whit

Stayed put in the draft and taken Leighton Vander Esch

With LB no longer a need we could have used our 3rd on Orlando Brown instead of Maliek Jackson

But I was just going with what happened.

Couldn't we have drafted Leighton Vander Esche instead of Price in the spot we picked Price? Not to totally give up on him but it seems like we found our center and its not him.

I don't even know what to say about this offensive line, though. Next year we definitely need to invest in it again. I'm hoping Jonah turns out to be above average--he better be based on his draft position.. That's a starting point if it's the case. But then we need 3 more starters at both guards and RT. But they say LT sets the tone for the line, and Smith isn't cutting it.

I saw some people bring up AJ. If I were him, I would not re-sign and look at signing on with the Pats or Saints or Rams if I was looking for a win now team. KC would be even better as their players are a lot younger. I wouldn't keep beating a dead horse over here. Packers wouldn't be bad either. Their offensive line needs some work but their defense is young and Rodgers has as many years left as AJ likely. As much as I hate to say it, this could be the perfect storm to lose AJ. He gets hurt. Probably would have a new contract by now if it weren't for getting hurt. The team still sucks, and the players are aging. We likely won't get anything but a comp pick for him. Sad, but that's the Bengals for you. He'd be doing us a favor by staying.

All of this is a result of letting Whit and Zeitler walk. What a shit show. Put us back 5 years.

It all started with a little smug owner who thought his buddy Paul Alexander could find the heir apparent for them and failed miserably.

The trend continues with bad evaluations by Tobin and our new patsy "yes sir" coaching staff.

I have little faith to this day.  Can't you tell.   Yawn

Andy needs AJ badly
With Zac Taylor calling the shots under the new regime, the Bengals run a hefty amount of 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR). In an offense like this, having a deep receiving unit is essential to passing success. Since Cincinnati’s best wideout, and arguably one of the best in the league, A.J. Green is out with an injury, Dalton was left with one of the most underrated wide receivers in the NFL in Tyler Boyd, John Ross and Auden Tate. Those last two are a key reason as to why the Bengals failed to score a touchdown against Pittsburgh in Week 4.

Nearly 90% of the Bengals’ plays were ran out of 11 personnel against the Steelers and they passed the ball on 71.9% of their total plays. Even with Boyd, who is one of the top contested-catch receivers in the league (caught five of eight contested so far), Dalton failed to push the ball downfield with having to rely on Tate and Ross. At the end of last night’s blowout, Tate registered a 62.9 receiving grade and a drop while Ross was marginally better with a 69.4 receiving grade, bringing his 2019 season receiving grade to 64.5. He may not have had a drop last night, but Ross’ hands are a liability. He has dropped 12 of his 49 catchable targets since 2017.

Steelers pass-rush ate like Kobayashi
As suspect as their offensive game plan was, head coach Mike Tomlin had their defense locked and loaded against the Bengals’ hellacious offensive line. Furthermore, they came out firing with blitzing on 45% of Dalton’s dropbacks and executing a stunt on 35%. These blitzes and stunts Tomlin and company had dialed up were magnificent, but even without them, this pass-rush had their way with the Bengals and recorded a pressure on 40% of their standard four-man pass-rushes.

Overall as a team, Pittsburgh generated 23 pressures and ended the game with a historic night for the franchise. Last night’s pass-rush showing they put on led to a team pass-rush grade of 90.6, which was the highest ever recorded in a game by Pittsburgh in the PFF era (since 2006 – second was 2018 Week 11 at Jacksonville, 83.6 grade). The Steelers’ pass-rush feasted, and it was by far the most they’ve beaten their opponent in the pass-rush.

Looking at their defensive front ahead of the game, one could have assumed this would occur with having two of the top interior defensive linemen in the game in Cameron Heyward and Stephon Tuitt and one of the rising stars at the edge position in T.J. Watt. This trio took the Bengals cookies and then some with combining for 16 pressures and each posting a win rate above 25% (Heyward had a 90.0 pass-rush grade and four pressures, Tuitt had an 84.7 pass-rush grade and six pressures and Watt had an 87.2 pass-rush grade and six pressures).

Cincinnati’s offensive line is really, really bad
Bengals fans, it’s okay. We will get through this section together. The Steelers’ pass-rush was successful because of their known skill, but also because of Cincinnati’s JV squad on the offensive line. Of the seven offensive linemen to register a snap against Pittsburgh, none cracked a pass-blocking grade above 54.0. From top to bottom, this line was just flat out horrific.

In all seriousness, this was among the five worst offensive line performances we have seen in the PFF era with their offensive linemen taking home a PFF pass-block grade of 21.4, the fourth-worst in a single game since 2006 (by far the worst by a Bengals team – next worst came 2017 Week 9 at Jacksonville at 33.7). No team lost more matchups in a single game in the PFF era than the Bengals did last night, and they also gave up a franchise-record amount of pressures.

Right tackle Bobby Hart finished the nightmare with a 24.1 pass-block grade and allowed seven total pressures (15.2% pressure rate). Right guard John Miller (30.1 pass-block grade) and left guard Michael Jordan (15.1 pass-block grade) were just as guilty as Hart was with those two combining for seven pressures allowed. Oh, and let’s not forget 2018 first-round pick Billy Price’s brief appearance where he allowed a sack on one of his four pass-block snaps.

You'all do know that Mike Brown just doesn't care. He'll get to cash that big $250M revenue sharing check from the NFL regardless if his team wins a single game or not.

The fans were up in arms at the 3 year 21M signing of Hart after he wet the bed last season. The team saw something in Hart, they said. The fans didn't seem to understand what they were talking about. Turns out that it was the team that didn't know what it was talking about.

And, don't forget, that it was Taylor who didn't want Pollack. Pollack got a lot more out of a sub-par line last season than Taylor and Turner have this year.

You can't be serious with that Pollack stuff.  Glenn and Boling were miles better Smith as a LT and Michael Jordan.  Trey is much better than Price but Pollack played Price over him despite the fact that Hopkins was the better player.  Miller is an upgrade at RG and Hart is a push.  Pollack had the same or better players to work with at every position but one.

I asked this exact question last week, no response. Really curious if a team has ever done this myself. Somewhere someone had to say F it, keep drafting linemen.

True that Boling was better than Jordan has been, but he didn't have a good year last year.

That doesn't change the fact that Pollack was a better coach than Turner and it was a mistake for ZT to get rid of him. ZT and Turner picked Hart to stay. They also accepted Smith as their only backup OT. Not smart at all considering Glenn always misses games.

But, my main point had to do with Mike Brown really not caring.

Jonah - out for season
Boling - retired
Glenn - concussion

I actually thought the Bengals did a decent job of addressing the o-line in the offseason.  They also tried to move up in the 2nd to get another lineman.  I don't think it's lost on the current coaching staff that we have terrible talent right now.

Sadly, this is how the organization will probably view things regarding the offensive line and not make any changes.

But you're forgetting that allowed us to keep Dre Kirkpatrick!!!

Who else is going to celebrate after getting dragged 10 yards down the field making a tackle? Or when the QB overthrows the guy who just burned him? Or when he holds on for dear life and draws a DPI to prevent a guy from running right past him?
