I watched the movie about him that someone posted about awhile back. I always liked his work and appreciated it more after looking closer.
There are a lot of drummers that beat the shit out of their kits. There are others that are really good at complex timing and technique. Baker seemed to have something more intangible. He could do all of the showy stuff, but he could also "swing" for lack of a better word. He had a gift /skill that was beyond just being great at playing. It came from somewhere else.
Also, as someone here mentioned, he was a raging asshole, lol.
