AJ on The Franchise Tag
#1
https://www.bengals.com/news/a-j-green-probably-won-t-play-last-two-games-but-off-season-training-starts-on-t

Quote:“I have no problem with the franchise (tag). I don’t like it, but I’m not a guy that’s going to sit out the whole year,” Green said. “But at the end of the day, that shows me they’re not committed to me. That’s fine. They have a business they have to run. As the player I have my own business, so if you do that I have to protect myself.

“If you’re not committed to me long-term, I understand. There are no hard feelings. You have a business to run. All great businesses face difficult decisions. I understand that. For me, I have to make a big decision as well.”

Pretty much said franchise me and I'll play just enough to get credit for the year; which I believe is after week 10. Starting to like this dude less and less. We basically paid him a whole year to wear a sweatshirt on the sideline. Dude should be like "I owe you a year"

Honestly...is it wise to pay a WR $18 million who has missed the last 24 or so games?

I doubt the Patriots or Steelers would franchise him. They'd thank him for their service and move on.

Common AJ just look at it as this year is the defiant refuse to play sit out all year, year. At least he’s honest. So is it just me or does the Bengals find a way to bring the worst out in otherwise humble people, cough Palmer cough Green?

Agreed. It’s astonishing the Bengals never traded him before the deadline. I hope they get something for him, but it’s time for him to go.

They can’t get something for him now, he’s a FA after this season.

Anyway, I’ll never knock a player for feuding with this team. I turned on Carson Palmer (who was one of my favorite players) the last time things went south with one of our stars, but I’d like to think I’m a lot smarter now, and understand the player’s side of it.

We can’t go on and on about “worst owner in sports” and then get mad at these guys when they get fed up.

Franchise Tag comes with a 2 - 1st round price tag, so they can still get something for him if they find a team willing to do it. Unfortunately, probably not.

Didn’t know you could trade a player on the tag. Interesting. That said, not happening. Maybe if AJ had played a little this season, but not now.

I used to say thus franchise was run like a mom n pop store but it seems like it is run more like a miserable and stale marriage. Til death doth Mike Brown and AJ part.

AJ is just the latest in a long line of Bengals stars who grew bitter towards the end. We can either continue a cycle of getting mad at our best players, or we can accept that our ownership is terrible and that's why this always happens.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

Yeah, a player that is franchised tagged can still receive offers from other teams, but the team would have to give up 2 1st round picks to a acquire him. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen.

You can. It was more common like 10 years ago. Not sure if it still happens.

But, what team would want to pay a WR $18 million AND give up draft picks...for a player who missed like 24 straight games?

AJ likely has very low value.

They really screwed the pooch not trading him before the deadline but i keep telling myself he wouldn’t have passed a physical anyway. Still Browns stubbornness is mind boggling. As for trading under the tag, is the team just entitled two first round picks or is it an actual rule that can’t be changed to what the team holding the contract is willing to accept?

Right...he's seeing a specialist with 2 games left. What team would have offered a lot for him?

We're the only team that will likely offer him a decent salary.

Meh Im not so sure he would still be on the sideline if we were in the playoff mix. Could be wrong but I just think and this is just my opinion, that this is his quiet way of refusing to play for several reasons one of which to stay healthy for a contract from anyone but us. But who knows, this team is such a mess.

He's been screwing us this year. Most expensive Ho thusfar that we paid to just lay (sit) there and do nothing. Not that it's ever happened to me. No, I'm not bitter.

He’s literally still going to a foot specialist, how’s he screwing us? It’s obviously much worse than originally thought.

Should have had the game winning TD in our first playoff win in a quarter century, but we all know how that went...

We want you Aj, but we dont want to give you a 5 year contract after you just sat out a whole year. We need 1 full year out of you to see how you respond to this years injury.
