Andy Dalton and the 2011 QB Draft Class
#1
There were 12 QBs selected in the 2011 draft. Here are the stats of each of them.

In order drafted:
rd 1, pk 1: Cam Newton 68-55-1 att:3980 comp:2371 comp%:59.6 yds:29,041 tds:182 ints:108 rate:86.1 starts:124 games:125
rd 1, pk 8: Jake Locker 9-14-0 att:709 comp:408 comp%:57.5 yds:4,967 tds:27 ints:22 rate:79.0 starts:23 games:30
rd 1, pk 10: Blaine Gabbert 13-35-0 att:1498 comp:842 comp%:56.2 yds:9,063 tds:48 ints:47 rate:71.1 starts:48 games:56
rd 1, pk 12: Christian Ponder 14-21-1 att:1057 comp:632 comp%:59.8 yds:6,658 tds:38 ints:36 rate:75.9 starts:36 games:38
rd 2, pk 35: Andy Dalton 70-61-2 att:4449 comp:2757 comp%:62.0 yds:31,594 tds:204 ints:118 rate:87.5 starts:133 games:133
rd 2, pk 36: Colin Krapernick 28-30-0 att:1692 comp:1011 comp%:59.8 yds:12,271 tds:72 ints: 30 rate:88.9 starts:58 games:69
rd 3, pk 74: Ryan Mallett 3-5-0 att:345 comp:190 comp%:55.1 yds:1835 tds:9 ints:10 rate:66.8 starts:8 games:21
rd 5, pk 135: Ricky Stanzi 0-0-0 att:0 comp:0 comp%:0 yds:0 tds:0 ints:0 rate:0 starts:0 games:0
rd 5, pk 152: TJ Yates 4-6-0 att:324 comp:179 comp%:55.2 yds:2057 tds:10 ints:11 rate:70.7 starts:10 games:22
rd 5, pk 160: Nathan Enderle 0-0-0 att:0 comp:0 comp%:0 yds:0 tds:0 ints:0 rate:0 starts:0 games:0
rd 6, pk 180: Tyrod Taylor 23-21-1 att:1362 comp:839 comp%:61.6 yds:9,562 tds:54 ints:20 rate:89.8 starts:46 games:70
rd 7, pk 208: Greg McElroy 0-1-0 att:31 comp:19 comp%:61.3 yds:214 tds:1 ints:1 rate:79.2 starts:1 games:2

Clearly Newton and Dalton ended being the best two QBs in the class. Ironically, they both have the same TD% (4.6) and INT% (2.7).

Not listing Cam’s rushing numbers is a bit misleading...

Front office clearly nailed that draft in the 1st 2 rounds. As much shit as I have given them, credit where it's due.

They didn't list anyone's rushing numbers.

How disastrous it could have been, though, if Jay Gruden wasn't there.

We could have ended up with Kaepernick or Mallett instead of Dalton if Mike Brown got his way.

Regardless, Dalton was the right pick in that draft.  Cam went 1st overall, Dalton in the 2nd.

Based on the expectations and where they were chosen Dalton was obviously the better value.

Not saying he was a better overall QB because you have to take into account Cam's rushing yards, but he was definitely a better value.  And my guess is Dalton will be able to extend his career much better than Cam moving forward.  Father time is catching up with both and I'm sure that hurts Cam's game more than Dalton's because he relies so heavily on his legs.  Time will tell.

That's a fair point....and I recall that.....but at least they listened to Jay.

Yeah, Cam had some good years there, but it's hard to imagine that the Panthers don't wish they had grabbed Von Miller, Patrick Peterson, AJ Green, or Julio Jones instead (those were 4 of the next 5 picks).

I mean, of the 5 players taken after Cam, 3 are future HoFers and a 4th (AJ) had a decent chance before his health went into the tank the last two years.

If you expand that to the 10 picks after Cam, there's 5 future HoFers in that list. (Miller, Peterson, J Jones, Tyron Smith, and JJ Watt). That's gotta sting at least a little.

Is it misleading not listing Dalton's rushing TD's as well? I believe he holds the record for a Bengal QB.

2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

Go back and compare Dalton to Palmer from a value perspective and not even close. Palmer was paid more money yet produced less than Dalton.

You could probably win a bar bet asking who had more TD passes, Dalton or Cam?

Looking at this list, it makes me realize how much the rookie wage scale has changed the league (for the better).  Before the wage scale, if you whiffed on a first round pick, usually a high first round QB, it was a death sentence.  The guaranteed money was insane for guys that had never played a snap.  When I see Locker, Gabbert, and Ponder so high, I can't help but think of how that would have KILLED those teams for 5 years in the past.  We should know...the Bengals whiffed and paid Ki-Jana Carter, David Klinger, and Akili Smith.  Those three pretty much wiped out the 90s for the Bengals.

Great point. CP made more money from the Bengals than Dalton even though the cap was much higher when Dalton played. Dalton entered year 1 of the new rookie pool.

It also is why teams can turn things around so quickly IF they hit on the draft. We just exchanged 11 million in cap space going to Burrow from Dalton which allows us to spend elsewhere. If Burrow is the hot we believe he will be, we have him at a bargain price also for his 1st 4 years in the NFL and option to add a 5th year,

Exactly.  And if you look at the teams that have contended for Super Bowls recently, a lot of them have rookie deals on their QBs.  Seattle did it with Wilson (and a 3rd round deal!).  KC with Mahommes.  Philly with Wentz (I know he wasn't the QB that won it, but the point remains that his contract was a rookie contract, allowing them to spend elsewhere).  The Rams with Goff.  SF with Kaepernick (God, that seems like ages ago).

If it wasn't a top tier veteran QB like Brady, Manning (both), Brees, or Rogers...it was generally a team with a QB on the rookie wage scale.

I think it bodes very well for Cincy that Brady, Brees, Rogers, etc are clearly looking at the clubhouse.  Although Mahommes could be around for a LOOOONG time.  He's crazy good.  One has to wonder what his contract looks like after climbing to $24 million next season (from an average of less than $5 million per year the first four) and then as an UFA in 2021.  He could break the $40 million per year number.  And while he is worth it, that would knock essentially $35 million of payroll off other players from last year.  Sure, the cap will continue to climb, but there are others on that team that will want top dollar as well.

Cam did lead his team to a 15-1 record, win the MVP and play in a SB.

I will admit that I guaranteed Cam would be a bust in the NFL.  In college he made one read before running and he was physically stronger and faster than college boys.

I also remember being pissed that we took Green instead of Patrick Peterson, but that ended up being a win either way.  I don't think he gets the credit he deserves because he does not put up big interception numbers, but when Peterson retires people will talk about him as one of the greatest CBs of all time.  He does not get a lot of picks because QBs just don't throw at him.

BTW since 2011 Cam is the ONLY quarterback with more rushing tds than Andy Dalton

It'll be very interesting with Mahomes. This off-season the Chiefs couldn't even go out for a night on the town with their $70 in free cap space.

Well none of the other guys rushing #’s are really worth listing. But it’s obviously a huge factor in Cam’s game. 4800 yds and 58 TD...

I agree Dalton was absolutely the right pick. He was a great pick, that I still give the team a lot of credit for making to this day.

Or Kaepernick’s. Or Taylor’s. Those two Newton and Dalton were the best 4 QB’s of the 2011 draft.
Through 2023

Mike Brown’s Owner/GM record: 32 years  223-303-4  .419 winning pct.
Playoff Record:  5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season:  37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.

He ended up physically stronger and faster than NFL men, too. Lol

I'll admit, though, that I didn't think he'd last as long as he has as a running QB. Guess it helps when you are built like a superhero.

- - - - - - - - - -

Yeah, I remember wanting either Julio Jones or Patrick Peterson before AJ. Probably better off having AJ than Peterson because they didn't really need a CB as bad as they needed a WR at the time, and I can only imagine what the Bengal boards would have been like early in their careers when AJ was racking out Pro Bowl seasons and Julio was dealing with injuries.

Julio turned out better, but even then he didn't really live to his potential until year 4, so maybe the Bengals would have missed the playoffs in 2011 and 2013 with Julio? I feel like in 2014 and 2015 he would have made up for it, though.
