Draft Trade Partners
#1
As with most years, there's already been a lot of talk about trading down.  Due to the cap shrinking next year, I don't think a pick for multiple picks type trade is very realistic.  I do, however, think that with a number of teams in cap hell next year, a pick for a player+pick type trades are very realistic.  A look at some teams that will be in fire sale mode and players that would both potentially interest the Bengals and provide the other club substantial cap relief..

New Orleans Saints($95 mil over per Spotrac)

Ryan Ramcyk/RT-Ramcyk will be in the 5th year option year of his rookie deal.  The Saints are obviously in no position to extend him and in desperate need of cap room.  A Cordy Glenn type trade would make sense for both clubs.  The Saints get $11+ mil in cap space and improved 1st round draft position and the Bengals can afford an extension to lock up their RT of the future.

Marshon Lattimore/CB-Also in his 5th year option year, so a deal for him would follow the same logic as Ramcyk.  If the Bengals  can't come to terms with WJIII, a trade to bring Lattimore back to the Buckeye state would make sense for both sides.

Nick Easton/G-Easton is having a career year with a 69 PFF grade, but this one comes with a lot of risk, as he's been a mediocre/bad starter to this point.  Still, he has 2 years left on his deal, would save NO $6 mil, and might be worth a swap of Day 3 picks.

Philadelphia Eagles ($63 million over per Spotrac)

Zach Ertz/TE-If the Bengals are looking to add a top TE target to the offense, a deal for Ertz would make sense for both teams.  Dallas Goedert has emerged as another TE threat for the Eagles and moving Ertz would save them $5 mil.

LA Rams($17 mil over the cap per Spotrac)

Rob Havenstein/RT-Rob would be 29 entering next year and would have 2 years left on his deal, so the Bengals could wait for the cap to recover some next year before talking extension.  The Rams would save $5 mil.

Houston Texans($12 mil over the cap per Spotrac)

Brandin Cooks/WR-Taylor obviously knows Cooks going back to their days with the Rams.  Cooks would bring some much needed speed to the Bengals WR corps.  Houston would save $12 mil and the Bengals could cut him at any point in his deals remaining three years without a cap penalty due to its structure.

Damn the Saints projected 95mil over the cap? That's insane.

It probably wouldn't be much cap relief but they have an under tackle that would be a great trade... David Onyemata.

Probably will see some vets like Brees restructure their deals to help the team out.

I'm sure they'll still be over but not nearly as bad.

This is an excellent idea.

Ihh Every team in the nfl will be cap strapped. So are we. Right now we’re projected to have anywhere from 33 million. We’re extremely tight in cap space. If u assume the cap will be 175(which most figure it will be then we h out 33 million to work with. A Jessie bates extension will cost about 14 per year. A Wj3 maybe we’ll get lucky and he’ll only cost us 10. Now we have 0’cqp and lawson unfortunately had to walk. So we wouldn’t have the money to take on a contract

If we're using Budda Baker's extension as a model for Bates, his cap hit is only $3.7 mil this year and $7 mil next year.  APY is world's different from cap numbers.

They got away with that Bc it was massively backloaded and Bc it was 22 million guarenteed at signing including a 10 million dollar signing bonus. We ain’t doing any of that. We prefer to front load.

Joe Mixon's extension is also back loaded.  He only has a $4.3 mil cap hit this year.

The thing you're missing is extensions to rookie deals that aren't in the 5th year option year are almost always backloaded from a cap standpoint.  This is because the relatively low base salary for the year is rarely changed and the only additional cap hits are the signing bonus proration and potential roster bonus.

Even with a backloaded contract, it’s not gonna matter in terms of who we can resign. We’re still cap strapped just like every other nfl team

We have the 6th most cap space in the league, plus have several contracts we can jettison.  It's going to be a buyer's market.

Still. Even if bates cap hit is only say 8 million, u resign Lawson for 10, and jackson for 10 ur out. That dosent even include the others we need to extend/resign like Alexander, Huber, Wilson, tulip, mike Daniels, etc etc or the draft poll money or carryover.

If you want to protect the Future of Burrow look long term, build in the draft like Miami is doing resign your young players, there will be plenty of chances to trade down in 1st round.

Bates is signed for next year and right now we have $42 million in cap space.  We could also pick up $9 million more if they do something with Geno.

We are in a very good spot with the cap as we really only need to get contracts done for Jackson and Lawson for next year.  Assume that costs $25 million (ill go high for arguments sake) and you still have $17 million in space - which would allow for 1 decent sized free agent signing.

That 42 million is is based on 185 million. It’s gonna be 175 million more than likely. Ur forgetting about plenty of our backups and lower guys that need resigned, as well as rollover and draft capital. Bates has to be extended this offseason. Priority #1.

Not actually.
The estimated cap for 2021 is $175 mill, but the Bengals also have ~$11 mill in rollover.
So their adjusted salary cap is expected to be $186 mill.

The currently signed players are expected to take up $141.6 mill of that cap.
Dunlap has a dead cap of $2.36 mill, which brings the total up to $144 mill.
So $186 mill - $144 mill = $42 mill in cap space heading into the offseason.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cincinnati-bengals/cap/2021/
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: 3-5 so far. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Is that number of 141.6 mill taking in consideration what they think we will be resigning players for

No, the $141.6 mill is for players who currently are signed through 2021+
Re-signing anyone would add on to that.

Yeah ur right I forget rollover. But we all know they will rollover 10 million every year so we got 31 to work with so to speak.
