Drew Sample chance to move up in Bengal record book
#1
Only 9 TEs in Bengal history have had more receptions than the 38 Sample has this year. With one game left he has a chance to move up higher in the top ten.

With just 6 catches he could move into a tie with Bob Trumpy at #7.

With 10 catches he could tie M.L. Harris at #6.

And it should be noted that Sample is still just 24 while Trump was 27 when he had his career high 44 receptions and Harris was 30 when he had 48.

Interesting side note about M. L. Harris. In 1984 he had 759 receiving yards which is the third most in Bengal history by a TE. His 15.8 average per catch was higher than the Bengals #1 WR (Collinsworth 15.5). In his other 5 seasons he never had more than 13 catches or 181 yards.

Don't take this the wrong way, as I am not anti-Sample like many on the board, but Sample getting to the same number of catches as Trumpy's career best while 3 years younger has no significance.  Trumpy did it in 12 games in a run dominant era.  Sample is 6 catches shy 15 games into the season of a pass dominant era.

Dont you have to factor in the current rate that teams are throwing the football now?
Trumpy and Harris were legit vertical targets.
Sample will be lucky average 10.0 ypc for his career
Teams the throw ball so much now, 50 catches
Back in.the day would lead the team.
Now 50 catches is 3rd on your team.

We’re in a era where a TE has 105 catches and 1400 yards.

Sorry if I can’t get excited over a guy having 40 receptions, <400 yds and 1 TD.

He’s not a starter, he’s second string.

With only 34 catches today Sample will bypass Dan Ross' 71 of 1981

While I guess that’s good to an extent, TEs are expected to be bigger contributors as pass catchers now compared to previous decades.
When looking at how he compares to his peers this season:
Receptions - 38 (22nd in league amongst TEs)
Receptions per game - 2.53 (28th in league amongst TEs)
Yards per game - 22.27 (37th in league amongst TEs)

That may be satisfactory to some, but I prefer a prominent pass catching TE.

Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Wow! With the pass happy league of today our TE can't even get up to a guy who played over 40 years ago. Am I somehow supposed to be impressed?

With 2 catches today he would have set the record for catches by TE's in 1936, color me impressed.

It's your world, you can have a happy little TE that's very average as a 2nd round pick if you want.
