Probably not to anyone's surprise, the Bengals are not receiving any comp picks for the 2021 draft.
See Adam Schefter's tweet for all of the Comp Picks.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

I swear the NFL and New England are in cahoots. They seem to get a 3rd rounder every year. I suppose losing the QB that won the Superbowl is something, but they did sign a starting NFL QB as his replacement

Cam Newton signed back in July, and it was only for ~$3.7 mill.
That was outside the window considered for a FA to be factored into comp picks.

Brady signed 2yr/$50m
Newton signed 1yr/$1.75m
Pretty positive contract size matters for comp picks. Also... they lost Jamie Collins who got a 3yr/$30m deal with the Lions, Kyle Van Noy who got a 4yr/$51m deal with the Dolphins (plus some other guys on minor contracts).
Patriots keep getting a 3rd rounder because they keep letting players leave in FA. They will probably have a 3rd rounder next year too because of Thuney (they traded for his replacement, so it doesn't count against getting a comp pick).

When Whit left we only got like a 6th or 7th because of some bullshit rule about 10 year guys don’t get max comp picks. So how do they get one for Brady?

They said on Sirius that the Jags haven't had a comp pick in 11 years; while the top 4 are:
Pats
Ravens
Packers
Cowboys

They’ve had more misses than hits with them.
Through 2023
Mike Brown’s Owner/GM record: 32 years 223-303-4 .419 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season: 37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.

No comp picks for the Bengals? Meh, big deal.. It's not like all of the ones they have had in the past decade have panned out into anything fantastic.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

I actually don't think they have ever truly hit on them.
I remember doing a big writeup on all the comp picks they have ever had (might try to find it later), I am pretty sure Landon Johnson in 2004 is far and away the best they've ever had, he was only okay, and the second best wasn't even close.

There were some pretty good players on the first list Nduwke, Landon Johnson, Scott, Mcdonald was a key contributor on a the Seahawks championship team. Also Tate, Phillips, and Glasgow before he got hurt were quality players for us.
Anyway just because the execution has been poor doesn't mean its a bad plan.

Pretty sure the 3rd isn't because of Brady.
Kyle Van Noy only had 6 years in the NFL and got 4yr/$51m
Which is funny because he got cut just after 1 year, but it still counted.

I think not having comp picks should generally be a goal of every franchise because it means that over the previous year you added more value than you lost in free agency, at least in terms of dollars. There obviously isn't a direct causal relationship between money spent and production gained, but you'd hope there is at least a correlation.

It's never bad to have the extra picks, but there's a reason the earliest comp pick doesn't come until after the 3rd round. The league doesn't want to encourage teams to forgo Free Agency just to get a bunch of great draft picks.
If you asked me whether I'd prefer to have comp picks or sign FAs, I'd choose the latter every time.

For damn sure always take the proven player. If anything all our comp picks have done is prove they are even more of a
crapshoot than regular picks. That is, except for like a couple players. I DO like Darius Phillips.
