Report: Burrow pushing for Bengals to draft Chase
(04-08-2021, 04:23 PM)fredtoast Wrote: How many teams would hire Joe Burrow to be their GM?

Any front office worth a damn would draft the player they want and not even consider Burrows feelings.

People love to criticize Taylor for having Burrow throw 40+ times a game, but if they left it up to Joe I bet he would want to throw it 50.  We all love his confidence. He probably thinks he can win games with his arm alone.  In fact a lot of great QBs probably feel the same way.  And that is why players play but they don't coach or run the front office.

Fred I don't disagree one bit.

It's only if Burrow has any sway on their decision and it's Chase... that's on him.

I think Sewell, Chase, Pitts will make an improvement to the team.

@Killer Goose can probably dispel that as well, as he’s a big Oregon fan.

I don't have source but I heard that Sewell missed a couple team meetings when he was younger and not sure this is true but he had Labrum surgery in 2017 and ankle surgery in 2018.  If those are facts, these along with shorter than ideal arm length had me jump off the Team Sewell train.

Joe wants Chase

Munoz wants Sewell

Looks like Team Joe v. Team Anthony

I'm rolling with the HOFer

Any front office worth their salt would be smart get the opinion of a former teammate regarding a player that's in consideration for their 1st round pick, or any pick for that matter.

Due to the nature of his position, Burrow is more than qualified to speak on if Chase is better or worse than guys like Justin Jefferson, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd.  If he says Chase is better than Jefferson, you take him at 5.  If he says he's better than Boyd, but worse than Higgins, you go Sewell or Pitts.

Have to hope the front office is paying attention to two of the best they ever had on the line giving their opinion on Sewell.

If I own the team and my HoF Munoz and should be HoF Willie Anderson say this kid is the real deal, take him... that should hold weight. I don't remember either of them saying draft Jonah or any other player in recent memory.

Boomer pushed for Burrow, seems like he knew what he was saying. QB looking at a QB.

You have two all time legends on the line saying this kid is the right pick. That should end the debate in Bengal land.

Thats fine if they do,but the sewell fans got to realize he's only 20 and he's untested vs top competition,  that's why trying him out at guard first would be a good idea.  But then they better take a good receiver in the 2nd again or our offense is going to be boring if not, struggling to score. With a defense that's not going to be elite. We have no superstars on defense.

Agreed... And I don't know who the 2nd round WR would be. The only shot we have at winning games is winning shootouts til Lou and the boys are gone.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

Yep agreed they have to win shoot outs. And I like about 2 maybe 3 in the 2nd,I was on the chase train because we are missing that X receiver, and don't know if the bengals would take the right receiver in the 2nd or 3rd that's going to be good enough.

As on the other way around you can probably find a guard or tackle in the 2nd or 3rd.

I will be shocked if we don’t draft Sewell. Mike Brown is running this team and his father who founded this team believed in building from the trenches out. His first draft choice was Bob Johnson a center.

Bates is a superstar on defense.

However to the rest, I've been on the Sewell first Marshall Jr in 2 or Dyami Brown in 2 train.

I'd love to see them get Sewell in 1 the top remaining WR in 2 then Meinez in 3.

That let's you have a line of Williams, XSF/Spain, Hopkins,  Reiff and Sewell.

Then, you look at the following year. Williams/Sewell as tackles,  XSF/Hopkins as guards and Meinez as your center if you don't resign Spain or Reiff. It helps this year and gives you building blocks for the future.

Then you run out Higgins, Boyd, Marshall Jr or Brown with Tate and Thomas as 4 and 5 WR guys and take another guy for WR in say 5 or 6 to develop (I like Powell from Clemson, good talent needs polish and more reps can be had in 5th) and now you have the offense looking solid for a few seasons.

Bates was good last year but I'm not seeing superstar,he's best in coverage and not a good tackler. I remember him being carried like a rag doll vs cleveland.

As in them wide receivers you mention , they'd have to be on the bengals radar. They could pick someone totally different  that wouldn't be that good, that's a risk you take with taking sewell.

That's my concern too.

There are some good WRs later(some only if they slip into the 2nd)but not what I believe our team needs.

It's not saying they are not any good.  Just not the fit for us.

It's the risk in the draft in generall.

If they take Chase 1st, they have an huge addition to the WR room but you then run the risk of the OL options at 38 not being as athletic and certainly not going to find a guy in round 2 with the ceiling of Sewell. Finding guys with flaws, or from small schools, or injury concerns that knocked them down or guys that are really solid but at their ceiling already.

By the same logic, if you take Sewell you secure your line anchor for years but now you have to play the wait and see game at 38 for who is going to be available.

I only lean Sewell because we've struggled for so many years with the O-line. I have no doubt Chase would be good here, and I think Pitts would be a really fun weapon to watch.

When I gauge the two options I think will be there with Chase and Sewell, I look at it as Sewell has the higher ceiling. I think Chase can be a great WR, but I don't see him being the best WR in the league. I think top 10 maybe, more likely top 15ish. Still great but when I look at Sewell and his ceiling, I see a guy that I think could be the top LT in the league.

The flip side of this argument would be their floor. With Chase, I feel his floor is higher then Sewell's. There is bust risk in any draft prospect, but when I look at the two of these guys I don't see any real bust potential. If neither lives up to the hype I think Chase's floor ends up looking better then the floor of Sewell that maybe ends up as a good RT. Nice, but not what you want at 5.

So, now you look at need. And our deep at WR needs improvement, as does our depth at OL. I just see the top of our WR group is really good, then a drop off to Tate and Thomas and etc. With the O-line we have 5 solid guys if they are all healthy and that if is a HUGE if with this group. Jonah is yet to have a full season, he pulls another half season and you have to start labeling him like Eifert as an injury concern. Spain, been steady. XSF, has been injured three straight years. Hopkins coming off ACL.. so.. maybe he is ready, if not... it's Price. And then Reiff who is here for a year and had a foot injury.

There isn't a wrong answer. Chase or Sewell or Pitts.

It's just a matter of which group concerns you most as a fan, and for the Bengals as a front office.

I think the way they've developed WRs over the years gives me more hope they can find the diamond in the rough there. I mean, look no further then Higgins last season who was 3rd among rookie WRs. And Lamb was barely ahead of him on yards 935 to 908 with 7 more catches for Lamb... so damn near the 2nd best rookie WR and taken after a lot of more hyped guys.

Yeah exactly, its how the fans feel about them and how the organization feels could be completely different.  But I see sewell as could be a beast in the run game, but passing game might have his issues at first. I'm not so sure he's that far and above other guys in the draft. Our fans will want him to be munoz.

My favorite of them all is pitts because I think he will take offenses to the next level. But we did not sign a veteran receiver and we need a deep threat, not throw everything short. I also see tee higgins as he was NFL ready coming from Clemson and played in the national championship.  And I don't see him as that great,he did good but I don't see him as a star #1 ,receiver I just don't. I see Tyler boyd as the same way, hes a good slot guy and possession receiver, but not #1 or dynamic. I see neither as a deep ball guy either. We need that.

So that's where I would hope they add 1 or 2 of the guys that have speed and height in the 2nd round and later if they took Sewell. If not I see a just ok offense, not exciting, not winning games. We have to win shoot outside like I mentioned.  That's zacs play style anyway. He likes to go 3 or 4 wide out.

Jessie Bates is the best center field safety in the NFL and it's really not even close.

LoL nah not buying it,don't care what pff says

Edit- so you're telling me hes better then reggie Nelson? And safeties are that bad in the nfl right now?

Tobin has OL starter grades on players who are available in the first 3 rounds at least. I don’t know if the same is true about starting outside receivers. That might be the difference

Reggie Nelson was not a center field safety. He played alot of cover 2 and over hang.

I repeat Jessie Bates is the best centerfield safety in the NFL and it's not even close.

He keeps improving the way he did from year 1 to year 2 and he could be pushing for simply best safety in the league.

The dude is a beast.
