Make No Bones About Bengals Are Going Deep this Year In The Playoffs
#21
We have potential to be a good team. To me it comes down to the OL and health, especially Burrow. He's a tough dude, but it may take him a little time to get back on track. His injury was a pretty bad one and he's a QB who has been a beast with his legs. Its a huge part of his game. I know he is working hard but as fans we should expect an adjustment period and a lot of feeding it to Mixon at first.

Number of 30+ ppg offenses the last 10 years.
2020: 5
2019: 1
2018: 3
2017: 0
2016: 1
2015: 2
2014: 2
2013: 1
2012: 2
2011: 3

Other than 2020, where they didn't play any preseason games, 30+ ppg means you had a Top-3 offense. If you see this 2021 Bengals team as a Top-3 offense, I want some of the drugs you're taking. They were the 29th ranked scoring offense in 2020. Even if you want to just look at the Burrow games, they were still only the 25th ranked scoring offense in 2020.

I'm thinking we can easily be top 16/top 10. I wonder what the PPG for those teams were the last few years.

If you want to be Top-16, you need to score roughly 25ppg in 2020 just to squeak in. Basically an increase of 5.5 per game from what the Bengals did. Top-10 is interesting because #10 was 27ppg, but then there's a big gap and #9 is a full point ahead at 28ppg. (Bigger gap than it sounds.)

I still think 2020 scoring was simply up because a lack of preseason hurt defenses most. Here's the minimum to squeak into those rankings the last couple years, rounded to the nearest half.

Top-16
2020: 25
2019: 22.5
2018: 23
2017: 21.5
2016: 23
2015: 23
2014: 22
2013: 23.5
2012: 23.5
2011: 23

Top-10
2020: 27
2019: 25
2018: 26
2017: 24
2016: 25
2015: 24.5
2014: 24.5
2013: 26
2012: 25
2011: 24

So roughly it looks like if scoring goes closer to normal with the return of a couple preseason games, you'll need ~23ppg to squeak into Top-16 and ~25ppg to squeak into Top-10.

Positive things are on the way, have you seen the changes from our front office this offseason so far. It has been tremendous. We picked up a guard in Reiff that will dramatically change this offensive line under Pollack. With the addition of Carman to guard and a healthy Williams we are looking at a fresh revamped line to protect Joe Burrow.

And speaking of, Chase to Burrow this season? It wont get better than this. We are talking LSU magic in stripes.

Now how can you not be excited about this? Yes, Zac struggled his first two seasons but with a sub par offensive line, how could he actually carry out his guru offensive minded plays? He was shackled, shackled I tell you under Jim Turners OL. Now he will have a playbook that will light up the NFL.

With a healthy defense we will also be able to see The Italian sausage himself, Lou Anarumo carry out his vision of what a 21st century defense looks like. I'm telling you its magic, magic!!!

And finally with a front office and Elizabeth Blackburn selling those HOT HOT HOT new jerseys we will all have something to wear on game day to cheer our favorite team on. Now get that credit card out and place your order. Don't forget to throw a hat in to boot! ThumbsUp

Now Who is with me? WHO DEY 2021 all the way to this year's Super Bowl!!!   *

*I hijacked GodFather's account this is really DennyG posting, the original BB Gangsta. WhoDey!!!!!

I get the overwhelming sarcasm, even without the special emoji.

I won't say they are going deep in to the playoffs, but I have a great deal of optimism about this team.

Last year's squad that they fielded on week 1 would lose 55-0 to this year's squad:

A suddenly listless AJ Green that generates no separation compared to Ja'Marr Chase?
Tee Higgins instead of John Ross?
XSF/Spain instead of Mike Jordan?
Jackson Carman instead of Fred Johnson/Alex Redmond (I know XSF started at RG and was promptly injured)
Reilly Reiff instead of Bobby Hart?
Joe Burrow in year 2 in the system with a full offseason? (Yes, he will be ready week 1)
Frank Pollack instead of Jim Turner?

That is just on the offensive side of the ball!!!

Larry Ogunjobi instead of an injured Geno Atkins?
Trey Hendrickson instead of a lazy Carlos Dunlap?
Mike Hilton instead of Mackenzie Alexander?
Trae Waynes instead of Darius Phillips (I might actually take Phillips on that one)
Pass Rushing specialist Ossai vs Lawson (again, I would probably take Lawson, but I am trying to show all the changes)

Add in the depth at the defensive line with Daniels, Tupou, and Shelvin.  You also have Vonn Bell, who really came on as the season progressed, in his second year with Bates.  Hubbard missed significant time last year on defense.  For God's sake, they were rolling out LeShawn Sims as a STARTER in many games.  Also, it is year 2 for the young LBs (Wilson and ADG) and year 3 for Pratt.

Special teams?  Well, Fat Randy lost week 1...I could see Mcpherson being a major upgrade there.

All those improvements and that team should have beaten the Chargers, who finished 7-9 last year.  Once the Bengals got Higgins on the field last year and sorted out some of the offensive line woes at Guard, they won against playoff teams Tennessee and pittsburgh.  They damn near beat the playoff Browns and Colts.  If Burrow finishes the season last year, don't you think they win at least two more games?  Figure in the stupid ass tie against Philly and the Bengals weren't far from 7 wins LAST YEAR.

I just see so many massive improvements and a young, energetic team that thinking they would win 10 games and make the playoffs isn't absurd at all.

Yeah, games like 13 targets to AJ Green for only 3 receptions tends to hurt production.  So does not having Joe Mixon and a horrible offensive line.

It would be a ridiculous step, and (sorry, Andy) if Dalton was still leading the charge with all those weapons, I still couldn't say it.   But this isn't Dalton's team.  We have Joe Burrow.  And I think this guy, with a decent offensive line and these weapons, can become "30-burger Burrow".

It would also help if the defense were able to get them a few more possessions.

Just tired from years of emotional investment, only to be let down repeatedly.  Maybe if I take a more skeptical approach, perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised if they do have some success.

I always try to cultivate a positive out look with the Bengals. Don't understand the few people here who act like they are in a competition to see who can be the biggest complainer about everything the Bengals do.

That being said, I am not going to predict that this team goes deep into the playoffs. And I realize it will take a lot of "luck" for us to be competitive. But I don't mean an unreasonable amount of "good luck". I just mean a lack of "bad luck".

I would not consider it "good luck" if Burrow, Higgins, and our young LBs all played better this year. Players are just supposed to improve over their rookie seasons.

I would not consider it "good luck" if at least one of our top 4 CBs did not miss games with injury this year. All teams have injuries, but usually some players stay healthy. Same with Jonah Williams who has missed 22 of 32 games so far in his NFL career,

Overall this team has enough talented to be competitive for the playoffs. It just all comes down to COACHING and injuries.

I get that.  The weird thing I have unintentionally done to help the Bengals is have a lot of personnel disasters. It is odd...at the roughest points of my life, the Bengals were amazing.  So, needless to say, I have been pretty blessed most of my life because they have sucked far more than been amazing.

I was in college when they went to the Super Bowl with Boomer.  Was in a really bad car accident that had me miss nearly a month of my college swim season.  Neck is still f'd up to this day, and can't really look over my left shoulder.

More recently, went through divorce, was laid off, COVID, and other things that are a bit more personal.  So, I am thinking the Bengals are in EXCELLENT shape!  I really took one for the team!   Hilarious

And I am not trying to have a pity party.  I have been stressed out and it is not a very happy time, but I don't stay on the mat.  I always rise, and I will again.  I am just hoping in my time of personal issues that the Bengals get the good energy that has left me.

And I am telling you... Aaron Rodgers winning an MVP while throwing 48 TDs, with the best OL in the league last year, with an All-Pro 18 TD WR, an 11 TD TE, and a Pro Bowl RB "only" averaged 31.8 points per game.

30+ ppg for the Bengals ain't happening. People throw out numbers like that because they're nice and round and neat, but it's not feasible.

Even the Chiefs fell short of 30 ppg last season, and they have the best QB in the NFL, the best TE in the NFL, a good OL, the most explosive WR in the NFL, and a top-3 offensive mind calling the plays.

Burrow is going to take time to get back up to his old self. Remember he was riding the wave of having one of the best college seasons of any QB in history. He is coming off the back of a devastating injury and probably will be a bit more trigger happy early in the season when their is pressure.

If the line can hold up, you get the running game going with Mixon and you get your playmakers in space and make some yards after the catch then you might be able to pick up some wins to keep yourself in the race until Burrow settles back in.

I think the defense will make plays and look forward to seeing Ossai cause havoc off the edge!

I get it...you have supported your statement with good factual information.  I completely understand.  BUT....There is always a BUT....The Bengals defense has been suspect and as we saw even in the Jacksonville game, that the Bengals won't be able to take the foot off the gas in many games.  They might have to average over 30 to win 10 games.

I know it isn't likely, but what I saw Burrow do with guys like Chase, Jefferson (we have Boyd), Marshall (we have Higgins), and CEH (we have Mixon)....I won't say it is not feasible.  It isn't just the weapons, but Burrow himself.  I think that much of the guy.  And with Marvin gone, I don't see them playing kill the clock with a 7 point lead in the 2nd quarter.

I'm right there with you.

I want to believe they've really improved the Oline. But until I see results in games I'm not gonna just drink a quart of kool-aid. I hope the defense is better but until we get some more W's I'm gonna refrain from declaring  it all good.

I hope JB can hit the ground running and turn up the heat. But I'd guess it'll take him several games to get his sea legs back. I'd love the see chase set the world on fire his rookie season, but I'd guess he'll have some adjustment period.

And mainly, I want to believe ZT and Co. can coach em up. But I'm skeptical, for now.

Given all the questions this team has right now... Will Burrow be 100% early into the season? Did they do enough to make the O-line at least average? Is Zac really over his head or is he a decent coach? Will the defense improve to be at least average as well?

With those things in question, I'll be happy with 7-10 this year. If they make the playoffs I'll be pleasantly surprised. If they make the playoffs and actually win one of those games I'll be shocked and also very happy.

Anyway, it is a new season. NFL teams can go from garbage to playoff teams and back to garbage over the course of a few years. It depends on so many factors, and often some luck, so that it is very hard to predict. Either way I'm just looking forward to watching the Bengals play this year. I think they did some good things during the off season and I'm looking forward to how that plays out.

Im just gonna say this,

The people most positive about the team having great success in 2021, and thinking the Bengals have a shot at the postseason

will also be the loudest ones crying about "FIRE X, FIRE Y"

I've seen it all too many times

and I'll be laughing

In all seriousness, this team is going to be lucky to win 6 games this year tops. They did not do enough this offseason to address the MOST important thing, offensive line.

For the life of me I don't understand where the thought process is on this.

1) Protect the most important asset this team acquired in over a decade Joe Burrow. Protect Protect Protect your most valuable asset!!

2) If I was the head coach and offensive play caller on the team I would want to make sure I had an offensive line that would allow for my plays to develop and I could actually open up my playbook. If my QB is getting sacked 2 seconds after snap, those plays are going to be very limited with he lack of time for plays to develop into something.

3) Mike Brown's stubbornness hasn't mellowed over the years. I cant tell you how off-putting it was for him to put the Bengals failures the past two offseasons on the fans. "You asked for change and hear it is" What kind of bullshit talk is that from a person who controls the team?

I think Chase is going to be a great player, the Bengals had options and feel if they were going after Chase all along they should've done more in FA to acquire a proven offensive lineman. Reiff was a good pickup but signing a 32 year old isn't close to enough fixing this line.

And I'm not going to even start with them keeping Lou Anarumo around for another season, I don't know what crack pipe was up the front offices ass on the decision keeping him around for a 3rd season after his previous 2 outings as a DC. Ridiculous.
