Underrated Comedies
#1
Share your underrated comedies here. Here's a few of mine....

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

You might not think this is underrated. I know a lot of people like it. Why I am including it as I think it stands toe to toe with any of the best comedies from that era. You often here about Old School, or Wedding Crashers, or Stepbrothers, or Superbad, but you never really hear this one brought up. I won't say it's the best of all of them, but I think it belongs in the same conversation.

Strange Wilderness

This movie has an absolutely absymal critics score, and a lot of the user ratings are really harsh. But if you're looking for a stupid, laugh out loud comedy I think it's way better than people give it credit for. Steve Zahn is great. It's got a young Jonah Hill, Farva from Super Troopers, and Justin Long. I really enjoyed this. The scene at the end where they encounter Bigfoot was hysterical.

Waiting

To me this is an absolute classic. I've probably seen it close to a dozen times. It's one of the rare rentals I had from Blockbuster that I watched twice before returning. There's so many great characters and lines from this.

Hot Rod

This move was ahead of it's time. Andy Samberg made it before The Loney Island stuff took off. It definitely takes a certain type of person to appreciate it. It's so damn stupid but that's what makes it great. It also has an early in his career Danny McBride. When he tries to fight that guys and says "I've been drinking Green Tea all damn day" I lose it every time.

The Watch

I don't think a lot of people have seen this. I don't think it's as good as some of the other ones I've listed but I'm including it because it's either completely forgotten or never seen. For those that don't know, this movie's biggest downfall was that it got released right around the Tayvon Martin stuff. Obviously the studio didn't push a neighborhood watch movie. It has Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughan and Jonah Hill all in their comedic primes, shortly before the genre kind of started to die off. It's definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Walk Hard is a damn good movie, but Hot Rod is epic.

My vote goes to Hamlet 2. . . Steve Coogan plays a clueless failed-actor/high school drama teacher who fights the authorities to put on his politically incorrect sequel to Hamlet. It is a musical where Jesus and Hamlet build a time machine to go back and save everyone who dies in the original Hamlet (pretty much everyone). It includes tunes like "Rock Me Sexy Jesus", and Jesus' final line is "If my dad ever finds out what I did he will crucify me".

Elisabeth Shue is brilliant as Elisabeth Shue. Amy Poehler and David Arquette shine in small parts. Steve Coogan is a very underrated actor.

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story  --> Meh it's funny

You might not think this is underrated.  I know a lot of people like it.  Why I am including it as I think it stands toe to toe with any of the best comedies from that era.  You often here about Old School, or Wedding Crashers, or Stepbrothers, or Superbad, but you never really hear this one brought up.  I won't say it's the best of all of them, but I think it belongs in the same conversation.

Strange Wilderness Never heard of this one

This movie has an absolutely absymal critics score, and a lot of the user ratings are really harsh.  But if you're looking for a stupid, laugh out loud comedy I think it's way better than people give it credit for.  Steve Zahn is great.  It's got a young Jonah Hill, Farva from Super Troopers, and Justin Long.  I really enjoyed this.  The scene at the end where they encounter Bigfoot was hysterical.

Waiting I like most movies and sure I enjoyed this one but meh

To me this is an absolute classic.  I've probably seen it close to a dozen times.  It's one of the rare rentals I had from Blockbuster that I watched twice before returning.  There's so many great characters and lines from this.

Hot Rod Meh again

This move was ahead of it's time.  Andy Samberg made it before The Loney Island stuff took off.  It definitely takes a certain type of person to appreciate it.  It's so damn stupid but that's what makes it great.  It also has an early in his career Danny McBride.  When he tries to fight that guys and says "I've been drinking Green Tea all damn day" I lose it every time.

The Watch I do like the watch, don't know if I consider it underrated or not though

The fall down the mountain side goes on forever in Hot Rod and always cracks me up. Reminds me of Farley in Black Sheep
but it makes me laugh how long the fall goes on lol

It's the music in the montage that does it for me.

PS I like to party.

I might have to check that out.  Sounds like a great cast.  Plus, even after all of these years, Elizabeth Shue still does it for me.

Alright, aliright so it looks like we're not on the same page with most of these.  That's ok, it's totally subjective.

You got any underrated ones you'd recommened?  I'm always looking for a decent comedy.

I thought of another one that I'll bet most people haven't seen, Rapture-Palooza. I don't think it was a big budget movie but it has an unbelievable cast.

It's got the kid from Freaks and Geeks (also Mitch from Waiting), Anna Kendrick, Craig Robinson (Darrel from the Office), Rob Cordroy, Lt. Dangle from Reno 911, Chow from the Hangover, and a bunch of other people.

It's about the rapture coming and the people left on Earth. Craig Robinson plays the anti-christ. I feel like if you look at the cast you'll know whether or not you'll like it. I wouldn't say it's an A+ comedy but it's definitely watchable.

I love Waiting. Definitely an underrated flick from before Ryan Reynolds blew up. That movie hits close to home for me as I cooked in restaurants during my early-mid twenties.

A couple I highly recommend are Best in Show and What We Do in the Shadows. Especially if you’re into mockumentaries like This Is Spinal Tap.

Best in Show is a mock about a bunch of eccentric people who compete in a Westminster style dog show. I’ve watched it countless times and it just always cracks me up.

What We Do in the Shadows might not really be underrated anymore with the success of the FX show, but the movie is even better. It’s about a group of vampire roommates and basically just follows their every day lives. It’s definitely one of my favorite “modern” comedies.

It’s not that I hate any of those movies I just don’t consider them underrated. I’m not sure I’ve always been bad at pulling movies out of my ass. I’ll have to look at a list tonight if I remember to do it and see if I can find anything to suggest.

I said I'd come back and make a list lets see what I can find

What's funny is there's so few truly good movies the closer I look to the present that I feel my standards end up lower than they otherwise should be:

Stuber (2019), Blockers (2018), Central Intelligence (2016), Keanu (2016), Seven Psychopaths (2012), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Death at a Funeral (2010), Funny People (2009), Observe and Report (2009), World's Greatest Dad (2009), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Without a Paddle (2004), National Security (2003), Death to Smoochy (2002), Black Knight (2001), Evolution (2001)

Bad Santa 2 was much better than I expected it to be, but meh.

Idk I tried to pick movies I never hear anybody mention that I really enjoyed. Also this was just off a random list I found so who knows what should be on it that I just didn't see.

Some really bad movies on that list…

I do love Observe and Report, though. And I’d definitely say it’s underrated for a Seth Rogan movie. The director (Jody Hill) was also the co-creator of Eastbound & Down. And more recently Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones. All of which are hilarious.

I guess I'm trying to thread the needle between "underrated" and outright bad idk. I saw a couple where I was like I like this movie a lot, but it's truly bad (Like employee of the month lol)

Personally don't consider anything i listed as bad, but that's just my taste. What do you think is the really bad ones?

I mean, some of those seem more like they should be on a “guilty pleasure” list, than an underrated list, but that’s ofc just my opinion.

There’s also a couple on there I haven’t seen, but look pretty terrible.

It’s the best of the ones I highlighted, but I didn’t really care for it tbh. I’m not the biggest Leslie Mann fan (she’s fine in small doses like 40 Year Old Virgin). Judd Apatow (who’s her husband in case you didn’t know) is hit or miss for me. I did really enjoy his latest movie The King of Staten Island. He only put his daughter in that one though lol.

It's been a long time since I've seen it.  I remember liking it for the most part but t just seemed to really drag towards the end.
