If We Sign Only One More Big FA
#21
I would vote a v. good Center and kick Karras to LG followed so closely by a pass rusher and slightly behind that a CB.
But if it ends here and now, and I don’t think it does, I’d be a happy man after the revamp oline and TE signings for our new boys.

Do you realize Joe Burrow was the most sacked QB in the league, and still made it to the Playoffs. Also most sacks ever in postseason play, and still made it to the Super Bowl. Now,if you place a stud OL in front of him and Mixon?

I'd start a ring chaser thread but this one is opening up plenty of convo.  Walter football isn't the best source, but they're showing a slew of 2 star (solid backup) guards and some tackles that can play guard.   Someone will be there to challenge these kids. They're just handling other positions and the incoming player (or Spain) will get that they have to be happy with a backup job if they don't win it.

Isn't it crazy how Landon Collins just fell off the map?

I'd vote Tretter at C. Moves Karras to his really good LG position. This eliminates HOPING that our unprovens will be kinda able to hold their own and develop. That's still taking a BIG chance. BTW, having a good running game that eats up time of possession REALLY helps our defense indirectly. Use the draft for CB, DT, and DE.

I heard he did pretty good when moved to LB but just doesn't have the skill to stay at Safety.

Well, with me guestimating Collins + Tupou at $11 mil vs the cap, which could certainly be off by a mil or two either direction, we'd have just under $2 mil in cap space.

Releasing Waynes would bump it to nearly $13 mil. Fred Johnson would add another $2.4 mil and push it over $15.

CB (Gilmore?) and DT (Ogunjobi?) and LG (Spain?) all seem likely candidates. A vet chasing a ring (Bobby Wagner?).

We spend a ton at DE already. Ossai returning + Kareem (who PFF loved this year) & Sample and Hubert seems fairly well stocked. But a bargain vet or a draft pick falling to us (Ojabo?) would be worth a hard look.

Remember, we have to have a couple mil for draft picks and will likely want some room to sign guys the get cut or when injuries hit in season.

On the other hand, we COULD use a corner. Cut Waynes, go after Gilmore? Look for a decent two-for-that-price pickups like we did with Awuzie and Hilton? Apple played well down the stretch and got a new prove it deal, I am fine with him as CB2 if we plan on drafting competition there. All CBs get beat from time to time, the Apple hate is ridiculous to me.

Our defense doesn’t rely on LBs enough for me to go after Wagner. I like him, he’s a helluva player. But we have Wilson and Pratt, and some decent backups for those two already in place. How many years of elite LB play does Wagner have left to sacrifice Pratt or Wilson’s snaps?

Long story short..IOL if its Tretter, CB if its Gilmore with Waynes getting his off-season hunting permit.

Yeah outside of a rough start he had in a couple games early I thought Apple played well. Bengals fans at times expect our corners to never give up touchdowns and he's not a shutdown corner if he was he wouldn't be signing a prove it deal. Also to hate on him for struggling with Kupp isn't fair either he was the best receiver in football last year. All the love Ramsey gets and if Burrow has another sec or two and he's throwing to a wide open Chase where Ramsey fell down.

But I will say something our entire secondary needs to be better at is gettIng turnovers. Not sure if Gilmore is known for being a ballhawk but I'd say thats who I'd like to sign. Opens up our draft even more.

Better than Gilmore would be another pass rush specialists. Our secondary is good enough.

A Jerry Hughes, Justin Houston or Clowney may bring more turnovers than gilmore, IMO.

Having three above average CBs is a blessing, and with more pressure… watch out.

If Waynes is cut, Jalen Davis & Brannon (Practice Squad last year) are the only other corners we have. Some quality depth would be good.

I'd go with a pass rushing specialist DE, star cbs are built on quickness and it seems the best in the business have huge drop offs once they hit their 30. Revis and Sherman come to mind who ended up with big contracts they weren't worth. I haven't seen it mentioned but anyone think a cheap pass catching back could be very valuable to our offense. I like mixon a lot but he's not good out of the backfield. Pretty sure Sony Michel is out there and he is good out of backfield and should be cheap. Just a observation, not a top priority and could look at draft but rookies seem to have hard time getting into rotation for assignment and ball concern reasons.

Agreed. But quality depth vs gilmore is two different things. Please don’t take anything I am saying as I don’t think gilmore is good, he obviously is.

I just think there are a few ways to go about this, and at this point waiting to see what’s left isnt a bad approach. Also, the draft still presents real opportunity to bolster the secondary.

Best available FA:
CB Stephon Gilmore
Gilmore made the Patriots' defense tick from 2017 to 2019, as he played lockdown man coverage better than any corner in the league. He's at his best playing press man where he can cover the league's best receivers, but he comes back down to Earth when asked to play more zone concepts.

CB Steven Nelson
Steven Nelson is a classic overachiever at the cornerback position. A little undersized, he has been a consistently good player in the NFL, making up for some limitations with feisty physicality. He is better in zone coverage, but can hold up in man coverage too and would fit within most NFL defenses. He would be a good option to a team that needs several cornerback additions like the Cardinals or Vikings.

CB Bryce Callahan
Callahan stepped up and played some outside cornerback for Denver in 2020 when he was called on, but that's not where he's at his best. Callahan has been one of the best nickel cornerbacks in the NFL with a 96th percentile slot coverage grade since 2017. Brandon Staley's defense in Los Angeles stands out as a scheme fit for Callahan if the Chargers aren't planning on re-signing Chris Harris Jr. this offseason.

CB Janoris Jenkins
As Jenkins continues to bounce from team to team, he remains a reliable starting option outside. He has earned PFF grades between 64.0 and 73.0 in every season of his career outside of a career-best 82.5 mark in 2016 with the New York Giants.

CB Robert Alford
Alford is the kind of defensive back you can use to stabilize a defensive backfield in need. With the attrition and injuries suffered in Tampa Bay, he may be an option for a similarly blitz-heavy, majority-zone defense.

CB Patrick Peterson
Peterson was one of the best corners of his generation at his peak, but at 32 he is now seemingly well beyond that peak. He still has enough experience and savvy to hold up overall, but isn't as quick or rangy as he once was which hurts his production in both zone and man coverage.

CB Joe Haden
As an older defensive back, playing much less press coverage, it's time to take a look at slot DB or play outside in a zone-heavy scheme. If playing inside is a dealbreaker, the Giants and Raiders may want to take a look at Haden. Patrick Graham and Gus Bradley run Cover 1 less than 15% of the time, and allow their corners to play with the depth Haden needs to keep the game in front of him.

CB K'Waun Williams
You don't want Williams in a defense consistently asking him to stick with receivers in single coverage, but he's an effective slot option in a zone-heavy defense that asks him to get downhill on underneath passes and be an above-average run defender for his position.

CB Jason Verrett
Given Verrett's injury history, it's difficult to project him as a starter despite his starter skills. He's an outside corner.

CB Chris Harris Jr.
One of the best corners of his generation, Harris is at his best as a nickel corner capable of playing both man or zone coverage. He has had success on the outside during his career, but those reps are likely best if limited at this point in his career.

I go with with the pass rusher. Jerry Hughes or even a Jadeveon Clowney would be nice to have .
Having a vet to give Hubbard and Hendrickson some
Needed rest pays off dividends in the 4th q.

Burrow didn't need another couple seconds, all he needed was to be kept clean so he could look downfield.

Gilmore, then Tretter would be my favs, most likely will be Gilmore and Spain, which is still ok, but just could be better with Tretter... lol

Share your thoughts. Personally I’m team “sign one more starting corner.”

Give me Stephon Gillmore and I'm good...
