He sits out, you don't pay him, but his contract is still counting against your cap.
The way I laid it out, it would actually something we would do only after we 1) tried to sign him longer term to a more reasonable deal and 2) tried to work with him on a sign and trade. If neither of those work out (which could indicate the market for his services) and he still isn't willing to play under the franchise tag or play under a more serious offer, then let him consider sitting for 2 years. Obviously, that would depend on if the team could have the funding freed up and they felt it was worth it. However, I'm more trying to leverage the threat along with Mike Brown's history of sticking to his guns, to get at least something from him if he won't sign or can't find a trade that is suitable.
While the player has a right to go after his big pay day, the team also has rights. If I'm Bates and his agent, I'm going to be working to see if we can negotiate a sign and trade. Unless of course, Jesse wants to play/stay here - which give us an advantage.

I'm over this situation. It doesn't make sense to sign Jessie to a big extension at this point especially with the Higgins, Chase, Burrow contracts on the horizon and with the Dax Hill pick. And quit frankly, he doesn't deserve it after the season he had. He mailed it in for half the year and the contract thing was in his head...even he admitted that. I get him wanting to maximize his value, though. I get both sides of it.
I'm ready to move on. Either trade him or get a 3rd round comp pick for him and roll his cap hit over to next season.

Why in the world would anyone give Bates a fat contract and then give us their two first round picks? I would give it a flat 0% chance of happening.

This is pretty much where I'm at with it. We've obviously been trying to sign the dude for over a year to no avail. Now its even harder because are you signing the regular season Bates or the playoff Bates? Add to that we just drafted 3 DB's who have speed and talent, and I think the writing is on the wall. If he "holds out" then he misses out on being a Bengal, imo.
As far as Reader and Hilton speaking out for Bates, sure they like Bates because its obvious Bates is a likeable guy, but remember those guys were just answering questions asked to them by reporters. They didnt bring it up and offer their opinion about Bates just to speak out about it. They were responding to questions. I see no issue with it. Both Hilton and Reader like Bates and would love to have him here but if he signs elsewhere then so be it. Good luck to Bates. No harm no foul.
Time to move on, imo.

Which is why people should start bracing themselves for this all over again with Tee in a couple years…

The Venn Diagram of people who think Jessie Bates should be paid as a top safety for his postseason while ignoring his extremely mediocre/subpar regular season and up-and-down career and the people who thought Joe Flacco was an elite QB after his SB run in 2012 despite all evidence to the contrary is just a single circle.

It's the position he plays as well. Safety is just not a difference maker position and a position where you want to throw a ton of money at.

Exactly why they should trade him while his value is highest...

Bengals will likely use the argument that Higgins isn't even their top producing WR and he'd argue he can be though on any team (which I would agree).
I wouldn't be surprised to see him walk after his rookie contract.
People also need to realize that the teams that have consistently won (Patriots, Steelers) have let their really high-priced guys walk with plans to replace with cheaper options or draft picks. Sometimes this has to happen to keep the overall team competitive.
I also wouldn't be surprised to see Reader leave after his contract is up either.
I just don't think they'd pay top dollar for a 30+ year old NT.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
Sorry for Party Rocking!

This.
And the better the team the more valuable players they have.

For the millionth time - you can’t trade him until he signs the tag.

Idk about Tee being a #1 on “any team” (he wouldn’t be on the Vikes for example), but he would be on a lot of teams. Like - probably 20+. And by the time he potentially becomes a UFA in a couple years guys like Adams and Kupp will be on the wrong side of 30.
As for Reader, yeah - he’s probably gone after his current deal is up. At least if he’s still playing at a high level, and looking for another big payday. The Bengals typically don’t hand out large 3rd contracts.

I am ready to move on as well. Tired of this stuff with his agent, Bates doesn't deserve to be paid like a top 5 Safety, sorry.
Great Draft made this possible, great job FO!

He got Watson a five year $230M fully guaranteed contract. With Watson’s legal issues, he’s a miracle worker, not a cancer.

Yeah, that was crazy. And he still might be suspended. So they still may need Mayfield although he wants out. It’s a three ring circus.
