Sure he could get a team like the Jags to overpay for him on the open market. At the end of the day he makes more here because now that we should be perennial contenders he could make much more in endorsement money.

Not sure, it was presented as a more favorable structure towards Bates so I’d assume something along the lines of more year 1 money (rather than gurantee) or maybe years/void years to adjust cap hit and get him another run at FA quicker. Both those are guesses as what I was told was limited but it was more so meant to say the Bengals hadn’t quite given up yet on signing him.

We normally take care of our guys, so let's hope that we do but leave ourselves some room because we have some big contracts coming up in the next few years.
Well if he doesn't go all out it is better paying him 12.9 mil than extending him and him not playing all out.
I was seriously disappointed in the way Jessie handled not getting a contract last season.
He should of just went about his bidness and not worried about it. Now I don't know about his mentality.
What if he just takes our offer and is bitter about it? I actually find him playing on the Tag as better insurance now.
But if we extend him and he is good in his head that is the best case scenario.
He is a fantastic Cover 1 Safety with ball hawking skills and great range.

I just read reports he isn't going to show up for mandatory training camps. Who knows how true this is with all the rumors floating around but one thing is for sure his agent has a reputation for being demanding with teams in negotiations, and he will have Bates ear. Thats what doesnt give me much hope with how it all plays out.
It's disappointing because he is a homegrown player here who is young and has alot of great years left in him, but this is the NFL.

So true. Bates is a great guy, I just think he got the wrong agent.
It won't work trying to be demanding with THIS Front Office. They will pay you what you are worth, not much more and
not at the expense of losing any of the other guys we have to pay.
Bates should know this, the agent should know this, but hey I am just glad we drafted Daxton Hill and Tycen Anderson.
They will just be getting more reps if Jessie doesn't show up and be more pro ready sooner.

It’s not happening. There’s a reason we drafted 18 safeties this year.
I think we’ve seen the best of him. Pay him franchise for a year and make him prove he’s worth whatever his agent is asking.
If he refuses to play under the tag, so be it. Hurts him more than us.
If you see something suspicious, say something suspicious.

We all see the writing on the wall but short term he still means a lot to trying to win a ring. What makes us special on defense is building on last year's chemistry with a possible toy in Dax Hill. Even if Hill could start in place of Bates in a year, this is the year to take advantage of the stud CF in Bates and roaming of Hill. We still need some pass rush depth (remember when Trey went down), so until we get that, our improved secondary is our best shot of making the unit better.

Would a safety on defense get endorsements anyways?
I know offensive players do, but, besides for a select few, I didn't think defenders got many endorsements anymore.

If we extended him, I think he would go all-out. I think part of the reason that he didn't go all-out until the playoffs was fear of injury.
Without a guarantee beyond this year, would the fear of injury cause him to be cautious again?
I don't think he'll be bitter if we went to him and pointed out all the bigger contracts of higher rated safeties, like I mentioned, and offered him 14 or 15 mil a year.
I think his agent should also be in his ear telling him that the NFL stands for Not For Long, meaning that he should just take a long-term deal now of 14 or 15 because playing cautious for another year could result in injury or it could result in him having an off-year, lowering his market value for other teams.
I'm hoping we go for the tag-and-trade but we'd need him to sign soon for that.

Players hate the franchise tag. They obviously would prefer the security of a long term deal.
But the NFL players voted on and agreed to the terms of the CBA that include the rules of the franchise tag. So even though they don't like it they need to just shut up and play.
Bates will probably sit out part of training camp, but he will be available to play opening day.

Executives, coaches, players, and scouts ranked their top ten safeties for 2022, and Bates is ranked 6th.
The reason that's important is that four of the five players ranked ahead of him are making more than Bates on the franchise tag, with Derwin James being the outlier making less, but he's also on his rookie contract, so can Bates really command that much more than the tag?
Hopefully that gives us some leverage and James signs for 14 or 15 with maybe bonuses/incentives built in that could make it more because it's not the Bengals just lowballing him, that's ESPN putting it out there for everyone to see, including other teams.
Steelers and Seahawks are getting ripped off..... Adams and Fitzpatrick I don't think are worth their contracts.

I mentioned that the Steelers would be screwing us again with that contract because I agree, but hopefully Bates sees that smart teams won't offer him that kind of contract and we just offer him something respectable with 14 or 15 mil per and he signs it for security.

That would certainly be me. Making that much money and playing for a young up and coming team would be preferable to getting top money and playing for a lesser team.
But in our culture pride is king. What a waste

What could really hurt us is he plays the entire year with a big chip on his shoulder. Goes out and plays like the best S in the NFL we franchise him again and still don't give him a long term deal and he sits out the entire following season. Bates may hold out unless we agree not to franchise him again next year.

That agent isn't going away...in fact we get to deal with him again next year when the Tee Higgins renegotiation begins. David Mulugheta plays hardball and it works out more often than not in his client's favor who get huge up-front "signing" bonuses. That is what Bates is after and it is something the Bengals don't usually do.

Yeah... There's that PFF claim that safety is super valuable when it comes to WAR, but the Seahawks suck. Fitzpatrick really contributed to that defense when Pittsburgh was trotting out Rudolph and that other redneck at QB a few years back, but the Steelers are stuck in that just good enough to kinda compete, but not good enough to make noise. I don't care what that PFF study claims... Safety isn't that valuable, and it's foolish to give up a first for one.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

See it’s this kind of mentality that’s held the Bengals back for far too long. We are big time now Burrow,Chase,Bates etc have made it “cool” to be a Bengals fan, and Bates was a cornerstone of the most exciting defence of the postseason. They will all make some serious money the next few years in endorsements we aren’t a one season wonder.
As for him signing a new deal let’s be honest there’s no chance, but if he signs the tag and plays he has to perform if he wants the money he claims he deserves which can only be good for us. If he refuses we take the money in to next year and fingers crossed Dax can be ready from week 1.
Personally I think he will sign and play like he really has something to prove this year and he will go with our best wishes and hopefully a ring at the end of it.

NFL players get comped all the time on their home town. That actually adds up to a big benefit.
And think how much more it would be worth to eat, drink, and socialize for free in all the hotspots of Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, etc compared to Cincinnati.
