Pick 31- Logan Hall?
#1
Would you be mad if the bengals went to 3t at 31 with the pass rusher from Houston? Dude looks pretty dominant from what I’ve seen and production wise. Then we’d be in prime position to draft the best cb in round 2.

I thought Logan Hall was a parking lot.

I would not be mad at all. He would fit in our defense so freaking well. We could even have him in nickel with BJ for extra pressure. He can move around the line and is a beast. Would love it if none of those top guys fall.

He’d be a fine pick. The better our pass rush is the less I’d worry about Eli Apple.

I wouldn't be mad about it, but I don't think he's a slam dunk fit immediately.
He's 6'6" and 282 lbs, so he's kind of a tweener between a 4-3 DE and 3T.
He's probably an ideal fit as a 3-4 DE right now.
If he came in and played primarily IDL, he'd probably need to be used as a nickel DT initially while he bulked up further to become a full-time DT.

I'm also a bit nervous of his just one good year of production in a 4-year college career.
Just 1.0 sack through 22 games 2018-2020.
His 2021 was good though. 13 TFLs and 6 sacks.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

I'm opening up to the idea. He is impressive and would allow for us to target my desired CB in 2 so it would make me happy lol.

That's similar to what some were saying about Ojabo, before his achilles issue.  However, I agree about the risk involved with taking a "one year wonder" in the 1st round.

Said this months ago that he’s a guy the bengals could target. Had the best stats as a 3t last year and was dominant. If there board has him going before pick 40, then it’s not a reach and a comfortable fit.

There is a risk with him but I like him. He looked rather comfortable with his 40...4.88 at the combine. Didn't struggle with his form or anything. Pass rush from an interior guy is not easy to find and that's the part of his game that's better right now.

Worked out pretty good for our QB. As to his production, dude had to grow into his body. He played at 218 as a HS Senior,  showed up on campus at 235lbs, and was 285 at his Pro Day.

The Cincinnati Bengals may trade back a bit but not far and he would likely be the target or Gordon.

I would not be mad at all. He is a guy I hope would last until pick #63, but I doubt it. He or Winfrey would be just fine at #31 if we do not got a top guy falling. There is better overall depth at CB/S than 3T. Beyond Wyatt, Hall, and Winfrey, a pass rushing DT is gonna be hard to find.

For me, I want to get a starter, or a guy who will play a lot, with #31. For me, that means IOL, CB, or 3T. Starters are locked at QB, RB, WR, OT, NT, DT, and S. Likely TE and DE as well. LB is borderline. Pratt & Wilson were great in the POs, and Wilson started off well, but there were a lot of struggles in between.

If we buy Hill starting helps our LBs because he has better gap integrity, then I doubt we take a LB at #31. But if Dean or Lloyd slides to us, I'd really have to think about it. Elite LBs can still make a difference, look at Parsons.

I. Best Case Scenario.

A starter level/top tier guy at a position of need falls to us.

Linderbaum. Zion Johnson. McDuffie. Wyatt.

If this does not happen, then we have a decision to make.

II. Plan B.

Take a second tier guy at a position of need: Kenyon Green, Tyler Smith, Booth, Elam, Gordon, McCreary, Winfrey, Hall.

III. Plan C.

Take a top tier guy (if one is there) at another position we don't need as badly: S, LB, TE, DE. Hall, Pitre, Cine, Dean, Lloyd, McBride, Ojabo, maybe Ebiketie?

If we choose Plan B, trading down makes a ton of sense. Plan C, not as much, unless multiple guys are out there.

It did work out well for Burrow, but Burrow also had a much greater final year than Hall had.
If Hall would have put up something like double-digit sacks in his final season, I'd feel more confident to say he's developed well.
I don't consider 6.0 to be a crazy amount of sacks though.
His sack distribution this past season was:
0.5 against Rice
1.5 against Tulsa
2.0 against Tulane
0.5 against Memphis
0.5 against UConn
1.0 against UC

Tulane was 2-10, Rice is in CUSA and finished 4-8, and UConn is independent and went 1-11. All terrible teams.
Memphis finished .500 and Tulsa just barely above .500 with their bowl game win against Old Dominion.

Also, Burrow broke records in the SEC. Hall played in the AAC and only put up what he did last year. Big difference against most of the competition.
It was good, but not great.

There's definite reason for optimism, and he'd get a great opportunity to continue development in a limited rotational role if he was a Bengal, but I do think it's valid to have at least some level of worry that he might not become a great pass rusher in the NFL due to his limited production in college.

THAT is my biggest worry.  The level of competition that he put up his great stats against.  THAT is why I'm slotting Winfrey over him in terms of competition.  But is Winfrey a good 3T?  His pass rushing was adequate. Makes passing on Wyatt hard, unless we go after another position.

On the podcast last night, Goodberry commented on how Winfrey shoots up the field and abandons the run too often and why Hall would be better candidate for that reason alone.

Yup. Winfrey is more of a 1 trick pony whereas Hall is much better against the run

I don't think Wyatt will be there, honestly.
I think Winfrey's Senior Bowl will help give confidence in pass rushing ability, but he's in a similar boat as Hall in terms of college production.
Just 5.5 TFLs and 0.5 sack in the shortened 2020 season before coming on with 11 TFLs and 5.5 sacks this past season.

Bengals clearly have an interest in an interior pass rusher.
They've done visits with Logan hall and Perrion Winfrey.
I haven't seen any mention of a visit with Travis Jones.

8 sacks in two years? I dunno. His ceiling is probably along the lines of a Chris Canty. That'd be fine, but what's his floor?

I have a hard time getting into guys like Hall, Winfrey, or even Karlaftis at 31 this draft. They just don't look like first rounders to my eyes. I could more easily see a player like Ojabo or Bonitto outperforming their draft position over the course of their rookie contract.

I think Wyatt will still be available all the way to round 3 due to repeated domestic violence.  Travis might be more of a run stopping anchor and a pocket pusher than an inside pass rushing specialist.
