A reminder of why we need to be patient.
#1
Last year we did not acquire B.J. Hill until August 30, less than 2 weeks before opening day.

In 2012 we did not sign Wallace Gilberry until after the second game of the season. He ended up with 6.5 sacks in just 14 games.

In 2010 we traded for Reggie Nelson a week before opening day.

Oh yes there's going to be guys cut for cap problems. There's always a few decent guys cut during camp and so on.

I like the fact that the Bengals had the initiative to trade for Hill and Nelson instead of letting them get cut and hit the open market.

As long as it works out it’s great. The Bengals definitely deserve credit for “winning” those trades. With the talent they have now it will be interesting to see who they can add.

I have to admit that I am a bit like my friend who loves to go to casinos.

He has no problem remembering all the times he won big.  The others not so much.

Nelson had, at best, an average year in 2010:

-fewest total tackles in a 16 game season.

-tied for least number of sacks.

-only two seasons with less passes defensed when he played 16 games.

Horrible example.

Also, some of us want a center more than anything, and it is a lot easier to pick-up a team's defense than it is to learn a team's blocking scheme, especially if it's something foreign to them (i.e. zone blocking scheme vs man blocking scheme).

I know I need to be patient and chances are good that we will pick up more players before the start of the season. But when we just made a surprising trip to the superbowl and we are so obviously close to being able to win the whole thing. I just want to add those couple pieces now.

You can't compare 2010 Nelson to Nelson from other years.

Instead you just compare 2010 Nelson to the other safeties on our roster.  Then you will see what a valuable pick up he was

Nelson.................................  6 starts ... 2 ints ... 7 PD
Ndukwe, Williams, Crocker... 26 starts ... 2 ints ... 9 PD

The whole 2010 season was a train wreck so he really did not effect the teams record.  But I still believe that most Bengal fans are ahppy that we got Nelson in 2010.

You made the thread saying "be patient" implying that we can still pick up players late in the offseason or even into the season that can be productive in the upcoming season.

I say again, horrible example.

I still don't understand how picking up the best cover safety on the entire roster was NOT a great move.

But I will just let it go and let you think you were wrong.  Everybody will be happier that way.

Resorting to personal attacks, that's when you know your "argument" has fallen apart.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good move in the end, but being the best in a group of bad players doesn't make someone good, especially when it wasn't even a good season by his standards.

Also, we were debating but then now you're just going to "let it go," which is another sign that you know your "argument" has fallen apart.

Actually Brad I was specifically being careful to avoid any personal attack.  I don't know where you saw one, but I apologize for any misunderstanding.  I am sure it was my fault.

I do not agree with your opinion, but I just think everyone would be happier if we did not argue as much

It's called a debate, and you couldn't care less if we argued because you're more than happy to argue about everything else, but then claim that you're not arguing when your point has fallen apart.

This statement:

Quote:But I will just let it go and let you think you were right.  Everybody will be happier that way.
Was an attempted insult.

1. "Thinking you were right."

2. Why would you need to announce that you were letting it go. Even if you did, you wouldn't need to add "thinking you were right."

That's what you're doing here: deflecting attention away from the original debate.

I would LOVE for you to try and convince an objective thinker that this wasn't a personal attack:

I also love how you can speak for everyone on the board.

No one likes seeing the truth posted?

Sorry, Brad.  I did not really see that as an insult, but since you do I will edit it.  I don't want to offend anyone.

Now everyone will be happier because they won't have to put up with another of our silly arguments.

It's hilarious how condescending you are and stupid you think I am but get mad and report me whenever I call you out on anything.

All of this was also an attempt to draw attention away from your original argument that we should be patient like it's a given that we'll sign free agents late that can help us when, actually, it's not common for us.

I definitely do, however, hope that we sign a center that gets released or cut for any reason because solidifying our offensive line would make us a favorite to win the Super Bowl, IMO.

At this point, the thread needs to be renamed as it has gotten way off topic.

Speaking to the current topic - I'm really not sure who I would be looking to add but you have to think the FO will keep their eyes open and continue to look for any opportunity to continue to improve the roster. I'm in the camp that you can't have enough quality defensive and offensive lineman. If you see one get cut that improves your depth or a starter AND they fit your culture/schemes - snag 'em. If you can pull off a trade for them and keep them off the street - even better (provided we don't give up too much).

Sorry. Did not to imply it was common. Just pointing out that we can get impact players up to the beginning of the season.

And isn't there some kind of rule that if you don't sign a player until after the season starts his season salary is not guaranteed.

I personally wouldn't view that statement as a personal attack.
I would view it as a snarky way of saying, "I don't believe you're correct."

But that's just me.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

I agree with the premise of the thread that fans (including me) could be more patient.
But as with all things, we want it now, not later.
