Recent draft picks. You personal "hit" and "miss"
#1
Thumbs Up
Just a little discussion to fill some time during this dead period.

Here are our draft picks from '11-'19.  I have not included the players from '20 and '21 because it is still too early to fully judge them.

I have also removed the picks from the first two rounds.  Obviously when I ask about "favorite" picks there are going to be a lot of fans who really liked our early picks.  After the 2nd round it is really more "hit-and-miss" in the draft.  Even the best teams end up drafting some duds after the first two rounds.

So tell us about the picks you were excited about that did not work out.

And I know there are not a lot of people who are really "disappointed" with a player we take after the second round, but if there was one who turned out better than you expected tell us about him.

I know a lot of fans are upset with a pick not because of who we did select but because of who we did not pick.  This thread is not about the players that the Bengals should have taken.  Just the ones they did

3rd RD MALIK JEFFERSON: Typical "Looks like Tarzan, Plays like Jane".

4th RD ANDREW BILLINGS: Got to "know him" by wishing for Shawn Oakman. I thought he was a big steal

5th RD CHRISTIAN WESTERMAN: I thought this guy was going to be our Pivot of the future

6th RD RODNEY ANDERSON: Thought the dude was more talented than Mixon, but he was already too broken

7th RD LOGAN WOODSIDE: Watched the kid play at Toledo and thought we really had something.

Also like to hear who you all think was the most "over-hyped" of these draft picks.

I used to be a hard core draft junkie. I did tons of research produced mock drafts every year. Back then I could usually figure out why certain players got so much love. Dontay Moch had a freak 40 time. Robert Sands had a video of one especially brutal hit. But I never understood all the love for Andrew Billings and Paul "JP" Dawson.

i remember watching DE Dontae moch run down a receiver that had a 10 yard lead...     really thought he was gonna be special

While a 2nd rounder and a few years before 2011.. Kenny irons not got a go either.

Most Overhyped probly Ryan finaly even if he had no hype

I got overly pumped with Dontay Moch, Sean Porter, and Malik Jefferson.
Shame on me.

I also remember thinking Andrew Billings, Carl Lawson, Derron Smith, and Christian Westerman were steals.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

I watched Trayveon Williams in college and thought he was a steal. I still think he could be a good NFL RB if he could stay healthy, but at this point he is out of chances.

I liked Derron Smith (6th round safety). He was undersized but very productive in college with a bunch of picks and sacks.

I really liked 4th rounders Renell Wren and Orson Charles. I think a lot of people like the Charles pick.

Dontay Moch - I thought this guy was going to be a lethal weapon off the edge with his explosiveness and speed. He went on to record SEVEN tackles for his entire career.

Mark Walton - I thought he would be a good combo back and was great value in the 4th. Never put it together and has turned into a career criminal after the NFL. Disappointing.

Marvin Jones - I didn't think Marvin Jones was going to be good. I remember getting into an argument with a poster back on the motherboard who said that Marvin was going to ball out and I thought it was ridiculous. I said something along the lines of "He'll be lucky to see the field". I missed hard on that one.

Rodney Anderson - Was an uber talented RB just made of glass. I still think he would have been good if he could stay healthy.

Mario Alford - He was a burner and I thought he would find a place in the NFL. I found out that speed doesn't matter that much if you aren't good at anything else. Everyone is fast in the NFL. Totaled one catch for 15 yards for his career.

Almost forgot Darius Phillips.

Still blown away by his college return stats.

5 int returns for td
5 kick off returns for tds
1 punt return for td
1 fumble recovery return for td

Also started as a freshman at WR before switching to DB as a sophomore.  He had 495 receiving yards and 2 more tds.

I don't remember a lot of hype when we drafted him, but he played about a game and a half at the end of his rookie season and everybody fell in love with him.

And I doubt anyone will admit it now, but that same year a lot of people were excited about Redmond based on about one game played.

I also liked Tyler Kroft a lot.

He missed the combine for some reason then put up a bunch of really impressive numbers at his pro day. And he was big (6'6", 250). I think he is still playing in the NFL.

Finley was a bit of crap shoot I guess.  The Bengals ended up with 3 picks in the 4th round that year but they did trade up to get him (I think they gave up 2 6th round picks?).  At least he gave us this moment against the Steelers.  A bright spot during a very depressing season.  Then in 2021 the Bengals traded him and their 7th round pick to the Texans for their  6th round pick.  That 6th round pick was used on Chris Evans.

So at least they got something out of him aside from that one shining moment.  Big Grin   Also I noticed in the "Break Out" season thread several people picked Evans.  If that happens then maybe the Finely pick would have worked out in a round about way.  :)

Moch would make my list of guys I thought were gonna be good that just never panned out.

Paul Dawson was another I thought looked like he had some potential.

Dan Herron was another I thought might make a decent backup that fizzled out.

Ahh yes, I remember liking Dawson too. I missed him in the list, thought he might have been earlier than 2011 since I didn't notice him listed.

Damn I'm really bad at evaluating LBs lol.

I missed on (busts):
3- Thompson (coulda picked about half of these guys though-in my defense I wanted a LB bad for a decade there)
4- Billings
5-Sands
6- Derron Smith
7- Don’t remember being overly excited for any of those guys

My hits:
3- Hubbard/Pratt
4- Boling
5- Iloka
6- Burkhead

I Underestimated:
CJ
Marvin Jones (thought he’d be solid but not as good as he’s been)

I think the general consensus among Bengals fans was that PJ Dawson was gonna be awesome (teamed with Butfict), and that we totally got a steal.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

Yea, I think Burfict may have skewed our expectations of Dawson.
Burfict had a horrendous pre-draft workout where he posted abysmal athletic numbers.
But we saw Burfict play well despite that, so we though maybe Dawson was going to be in the similar mold of testing poorly but he'd do fine when actually on the field.

Dawson did have a great 3-cone, and his instincts and production in college were outstanding.
Didn't know he was going to have such terrible work ethic though.

I personally wouldn't call Billings a bust, especially as a 4th round pick.
He played arguably above the average 4th rounder when he was a Bengal.
Bengals just decided to go after a better player in Reader and let Billings walk.

He chose to sit out 2020 (I believe because of COVID), and he didn't even play 100 snaps for Browns last year though.
I still thought he was a solid NT for Bengals 2018-2019.
