Why dress Mitchell Wilcox?
#1
Why not roster/dress to long snappers, I feel this is much more important than a 3rd bummy Tight End. What is Wilcox gonna do? We dress garbage like Hakeem Adeniji but not a backup long snapper.

How many times has a backup long snapper been needed in the last 15 years?

No one carries two long snappers on their roster let alone dresses two. It's the same reason they don't dress two kickers or punters because it's so rare it's why you have someone who can be an emergency player there. A 3rd TE plays in goaline sets, almost all special teams sets, and jumbo formations....way more likely to be used then a back up long snapper.

I'm just frustrated and cannot believe how hideous Wilcox was at snapping multiple times.

Wilcox wasn't the issue on the blocked extra point. Sample missed a block. Totally blocked the wrong guy.

The FG was high and Huber should have fell on it.

Then, the punt snap was fine.

I wouldn't call him hideous.

Wilcox almost didn't dress this week from injury so believe it or not it could have been worse.

Criticizing Wilcox is crazy. Harris gets paid much more than Wilcox just to snap. You can’t expect Wilcox to be at same level when that is literally something he might have to do once every 10 years as an emergency long snapper. If he was perfect at it then he would pursue that a position and have a much longer career than he’s going to have as a TE

If Evan McPherson can't kick for some reason during a game, Logan Wilson would be out there. How well do you think he would do in a first time game situation?

Exactly. These are specialist roles for a reason. If just anyone could do it then these roles wouldn’t get roster spots. The question in these situations lies with coaching. Would we have been better off going for 2 after chase td etc.

The odds were probably still better with the extra point kick

Would be inclined to agree but I do question whether they were fully informed on Wilcox snapping ability before making decision. Especially given his injury issues.

What happens if all the TEs get hurt in a game and you don't have a bummy Tight End?

What if the backup long-snapper gets hurt. Better dress 3 of these guys.

Long Snappers are almost always a TE...    And you generally dont have 2 on the Roster like you dont have 2 Kickers or Punters... you have 1 and a guy that can do it in an Emergency.

Please show me a team that has multiple Punters/Kickers/Longsnappers?

They apparently were confident in Mitch's ability to snap.  The snap was good, abet a tad bit slower than normal but we are talking tenths of seconds.  A block was missed which allowed the block.

I'm starting a thread that the Bengals missed identifying a potential issue with Burrow's appendix during the scouting process.

The Chiefs kicker got hurt, and Reid their safety had to kickoff...and he booted that thing out of the endzone. It was very impressive.

This might be my ignorance, but why was Wilcox chosen over Karras?
Wouldn't the C be better equipped to handle the snaps?
He obviously does plenty of shotgun snaps.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Because as somebody that I was debating with in another thread said, Wilcox at least can offer multiple things for the team. What does a backup long snapper do on Game Day? We can't criticise them for having no proper back up at Long Snapper... and ask them to rectify it by having less backup at TE, a position which is far more likely to need that help. Imagine if we had injuries at TE... we'd then be castrating the team for not having the backup.

The problem wasn't the roster spot, the problem was that the kicking unit looked completely unprepared the minute Harris went down. There's always a chance of that, and the team needed to be more mentally ready for it. Stuff like not missing a block on the XP, letting the clock bleed on a punt and downing the bad snap on the FG attempt... none of those errors were on Wilcox, they're on the guys who are meant to be helping him out. That's what's disappointing here. Just looked like the team were poorly prepared for it, even if it's an unlikely scenario.
