I think when we look for the Best American Band.... longevity has to be in the equation. If the band was only together for say 2-3 years i cant consider it one of the best of all time. but we know some of these guys die... so if the band broke up because of a death then would have to revert to how well the songs still stand today.

Bands like the Doors , A.I.C (although still together i think but new singer) are great bands but their time cut short.

I think you could make a pretty strong case for it being R.E.M..  They had longevity (formed in 1980, broke up in 2011), one line up (when drummer Bill Berry left for medical reasons in 1997 they became a trio and never replaced him), they've sold 85 million records worldwide, and are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  They're also influential musically (Kurt Cobain being extremely vocal about it) and critically acclaimed.  

So you've got a band that started on and indie, were very successful, signed to a major label, became even more successful, influenced a generation of artists, never sold out artistically and made critically and commercially music through their entire career.  Sounds pretty good.

I'll admit that Aerosmith was among the first names that popped into my head.

I'd feel better about throwing out names like Skynryrd, AiC, and Metallica if their great years weren't cut short by deaths to their most important members.

Red Hot Chili Peppers is also a very valid nomination. I'd also put the Allman Brothers over Skynyrd but I don't know if they qualify as a band.

My personal choice would be Tool, but if we're talking about a band that could be widely accepted, I'd probably stick with Aerosmith or Chili Peppers.

I have deep funk roots.  When I was much younger I saw many live P-Funk All Star shows plus Bootsy's New Rubber Band, Maceo Parker and the Horny Horns, and many others.

What other ground breaking rock guitarist from the U.S. had more effect worldwide?

Runner ups Aerosmith, Journey, and ZZ Top in the rock/blues-rock category.

Jimi is more known for just him... even though his band was excellent.

good call on ZZ Top.  Gibbons is one of the greatest guitarists IMHO.

And he was 1 of 3 founders. but was with the band all of what 2 years
