It was expected to lose Bates and maybe even Hurst because people would overpay both. But we lost Bell and Perine on top of that 
which wasn't expected. Perine was paid to be a starter and I don't know if he is quite there yet. Really liked the guy but we can add a 
more explosive starter that can pass block. I agree with your premise though Bengalbug.

We will see how many come back and eat crow when this is all said and done. We have a lot of money to throw around and we WILL
fill the roster and there are lots of very good to great vets out there to be had still. Expecting a RT like Eluemunor, A Safety like CGJ, 
Poyer, Rapp, Love or Thornhill at the very least and depth players at Edge and maybe even 3-tech and Guard.

Last year, of course, posters were delighted right off the start, with Karras and Cappa agreeing to sign on the very first day talks could happen. So, really, until the last two years, the entire history of the free agent period was dreadful for the Bengals. It seemed basically getting comp picks was all we got out of it.

We're all hoping these is a New Dey and the Bengals of the last two years show up again this year. And that plenty of crow is served. And I'm quite optimistic myself, based on the last two years. But I do understand those long-time fans who are disappointed given the Bengals history.

It is understandable, heck, I am one of those long time fans and I almost snapped in the Perine thread and you caught it lol

We need to go back and look at this when FA is over and look at it with some objectiveness. The Pratt deal was a damn good one 
considering what a much poorer tackling LB in Edmunds got paid. We have a lot of scratch to spread around to a lot of players.

At 8 yards per catch, I am fine with watching Hurst walk, I do think some of it was scheme too many short 5-yard throws to him not enough 15 yard throws.

I will be upset if Mixon does not get cut since Perine left. We need to be more explosive at RB and TE thru the draft or free agency. I expect Mixon's release after we sign a FA or draft a high pick 1st or 2nd round.

If the Bengals want speed at running back then Jahmyr Gibbs from Alabama could be the choice.

Ran a 4.36 forty.

At 5 foot 9 and 200 pounds, he is smaller than Mixon and Perine.

The Bengals would probably want a bigger bodied free agent veteran to couple with him and share carries.

Gibbs has electric speed if they want it.

They can cut him and give him a post-June 1st designation this afternoon when the league year starts and almost the same benefit.  Each team can designate 2 players as such.   His numbers stay on the books until June 2nd as far as salary cap is concerned but the Bengals still get the dead cap spread over 2 years after June 1st. If they do plan on cutting him it would be the decent thing to do.  It would give Mixon an early start at finding a new team.   That's what the post-June 1st rule was designed for.

Warming up to Gibbs as a runner, I just don't like how he struggles in pass protection. But there are ways to minimize this.

If we are wanting speed, Gibbs and Spears are the guys I really like in this Draft. If we want more complete backs, guys like
Chase Brown, Roschon Johnson and Travis Dye are dudes to look at.

Losing bates and bell is big hit... bates is not easy to replace and bell was the glue of defense and I do believe we will sign couple FAs

Asking for help from cap space gurus on here. How much cap space the Bengals now have after these departures ?

Betting a nice piece or two can be bought in FA now and still leave some meat on the bone.

Bengals were not really in position to sign early signees that would require overpaying imo, but should be able to feast on what's left at fair market value with all this extra space.

Same as before. They were FA's. It is not like we cut anyone.

To answer more directly, about $37 million with 45 guys signed. Assuming we cut Brandon Wilson.

That is not counting any place-holder PS guys we have signed or budgeting for draft picks at all. Or for any signing bonuses on extensions that would get counted for this year, if signed.

We’ve been on the right side of FA with Awouzie, Hurst, Hendrickson, Hilton and Reader. All were let go. We’ll see with the players we lost this week. One things for sure they either got more money ( mostly tied to upfront or guaranteed) or a long term deal. Right now the biggest worries are TE & S. Can we man those positions and not regress? That’s a very legitimate worry today mind you but maybe not in May. We will just have to see.

They’re all going to be big losses, they knew and fit the scheme well. Bates and Bell have left huge holes already according to their coach and other DB’s. Hurst and Samje also were important pieces but probably easier to replace. That’s FA life.
