Chase Brown last night

That said I haven't been impressed with Brown either and I'm honestly not convinced he crossed the goal line last night either lol. Maybe he picks it up by mid-season or proves he deserves a starting spot the following but he needs work.

I tend to agree. They open no holes and get no push.   Hopefully the starters can perform better than they did last year but unless these back ups play against a horrible set of defenders a good game fir the RBs is avoiding a concussion.

We value pass blockers more than run blockers. Collins & Carman are the only two that are better run blockers than protectors.

It is a limited sample but the idea that you just get the handoff and run as hard as you can is not always the answer either.. most great backs also know to let things develop at times depending on what is called and plus good backs also read the defense...  our backup Oline though has not performed that well either.  Right now it looks like Evans to be the 3rd back but one preseason game to go to see if Brown can jump him.

Like I said, I'm not sure what play you are talking about. I thought you were referring to him running into a wall of blockers when he had the ball and was running. That happened a lot and is what sticks into my mind the most.

How did he grade out in pass protection this week? I assume any rookie running back will struggle at it in the pros.

Cappa and OBJ are good run blockers.

He actually graded really well I think PFF gave him an 83. Not quite sure on the science of how they make there grades. I thought that was funny because I saw other people point out him running into the left tackle. I suppose they're grade is only when he actually engages with a defender.

The blocking really could be the key for Evans to make the team, especially to act as the 3rd down RB.
We know he can catch, so if he can block now too, he can slot right into the Bernard/Perine role.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

I thought Brown has looked pretty good for the most part. He seems to hit the holes hard and is decisive. He isn't a superstar so he needs help from his OL to create lanes to run through, I think with a better line he would do better. He has shown some shifty moves as well. Both him and Evans have looked decent to me.
It's easy to see the world in black and white. Grey? I don't know what to do with grey.

I'd agree other than he's playing the RB position. Usually that position transitions pretty quickly to the NFL.

Yep! Like I said in my OP, he ran into the LT twice and each time it knocked the LT out of their PASS set and caused pressures, including on the INT play. Running into linemen on run plays is part of running, but on PASS plays a back on pass protect should not be knocking linemen out of their sets. It's something he needs to be careful of and address.

The forum generally over-rates draft picks. Most rookies are special teamers. Maybe 1 or 2 get snaps on offense or defense...unless you draft really high.

Plus, on a loaded roster...like the Bengals...it's harder to break into the rotation. Look at T Williams at RB. He probably would play on a worse team.

The real test will be whether he develops into something in upcoming seasons.

That said...there are teams that play rookie RB's and WR's and those guys have success. RB is largely a function of a good OL. The Bengals should have a good run-blocking line.
