The NFL is working on a kickoff proposal that would involve teams kicking off from the opponent's 40-yard line, with the goal of increasing returns.

Here's some of what it involves, per @AlbertBreer:

Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

Just really actively continuing to find ways to make the sport worse. It's almost impressive.
Quote:If the ball doesn't cross the 20-yard line in the air, it's treated as out of bounds and the receiving team gets possession at their own 40-yard line. Quote: If the kicker kicks the ball into the end zone on the fly, a touchback results in the ball being placed at the 35-yard line Get ready for every single over to hit in the NFL. A ton of drives are going to be starting on the 35 and 40 yard line this year. Not even pretending that we care about defense and low scoring games anymore. 22-27 yards will all you need to get to get a 55 yard FG try. ____________________________________________________________

LOL if this happens then defense becomes so obsolete... just go ahead and put all your money into the Offense as every game will be a shoot out.

All for trying to do something different with the kickoff. Lame right now and on side chance damn near impossible

So the NFL has done everything except eliminate the kickoff altogether, and now they're worried about the lack of kickoff returns. Here's an idea- go back to the way it used to be. Also, have the kickers kick off from the 35 or even 30 yard line instead of the 40.

Just go back to the original kickoff with no wedge blocking and any malicious hits or leading with helmets would be automatic ejections & suspensions. All blindside hits also.

I think the XFL figured it out. At least on the kickoff. Maybe the NFL has too big an ego to admit that the XFL is right?
Onside kickoff certainly needs reworking, and not in the form of a play from scrimmage.

Seems complicated. That's a lot to figure out before you are allowed to move. I could see a lot of flags resulting from this rule.

Wouldn't kicking off from the 40 mean every kick would be a touchback?
Facts don't care about your feelings. BIG THANKS to Holic for creating that gif!

On Moving the Chains yesterday their suggestion was to move the ball and make the kicker kick from their own 20 so every kick is returned.

That would make the game so much more exciting, but no way will they do that with the way Goodell wants to make it touch football.

Yes, has been approved. Here is a quick summary:
"During the 2024 season, kickers will continue to kick from the 35-yard line, but the other 10 players on the kickoff team will line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line. At least nine members of the return team will line up in a "setup zone" between the 35- and 30-yard lines. Up to two returners can line up in a "landing zone" between the goal line and the 20-yard line. "No one other than the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball hits the ground or hits a player inside the landing zone. Touchbacks will be marked at the 30-yard line, and no fair catches will be allowed. In the event a team wants to attempt an onside kick, it will have to inform officials of its intent and would then be allowed to use the NFL's traditional formation. No surprise onside kicks will be allowed." https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39812700/nfl-owners-approve-massive-revamp-kickoff-play What a massive change in the rule. |
