Dax Hill moving to CB

Please NO, KC has already figured out that Hilton is our weak link in the passing game, others will follow.  Been nice having Mike but no.

He likely should have been identified as a corner from day 1

I have no idea why people are flipping out and saying it was stupid to draft a slot corner that early because it seems pretty obvious to me that Zac clearly stated that he thinks Dax will be on the outside.

I think Dax has the movement in his hips to turn and run with receivers and I think he'll be a solid outside corner.

It makes me feel a little better about not drafting a corner.

He’s not really got much time

This shit we’re doing to him could hurt his earning potential on his next deal

We could’ve essentially ruined his career moving him to CB this late. Especially after showing promise at safety

He now has to show promise at another position fight for snaps with a 2nd round pick whose only played corner and even if he does good teams will still say “well hey you played better at safety so we’re gonna offer you safety money

The only way this works out for him is if he wins the job AND performs better than he did at Safety

We screwed this kid HARD

Didn't he play the most snaps on the team last year?

He is going to play a ton of snaps again this year. So how is he getting screwed? He is a key piece of our secondary.

Right, and he’s only 23. And he only played 14% of the defensive snaps his rookie season. Last season was brutal for him, no two ways around it. But I’m not writing him off as a bust just yet.

Dax, himself, is not a bust, but the coaching staff has totally screwed up a talented player and seemingly burnt a 1st Rd draft pick.  This is amateur hour with this staff.

I hope it pans out for him at CB, I really do...but it's going to be an uphill battle for him.

Couldnt cut it?  Guy had better stats in his first year starting than Bates did in his 4th season.

Lou couldnt cut it.

Call it what you want it's not a good look for a 1st round pick going into their contract year switching positions and becoming a backup. Year three for a 1st round pick is the earn that guaranteed 5th year option contract year.

The quote I read in the OP said nothing about Slot or backup. Where are you getting this?

Fair, but if he takes the CB2 spot from Turner, then that pick looks bad, no?

I think the confusion might be coming from:

Says Hill will compete at outside CB, as well

As well as Safety or Slot? If he’s being moved to the CB room like reported, I would think the latter. But it definitely needs clarification.

Yes Exactly! though not as bad. The Bengals are depending on these top 100 defensive draft picks to step up and play at a high level.

The majority of their top 100 picks have gone to defense over the last 3 years.. they have to start getting snaps from them.

Lou is not above criticism.  He had a full year to get Dax ready, or learn if he was or was not capable.  I put Dax' failings squarely on the coaching staff until I hear different.

Which is why this super sucks

So if Dax excels and takes DJ spot then DJ losses snaps that he ABSOLUTELY needs cause he hit a wall hard last season after starting well.

This is the issue with drafting BPA

Eventually you are gonna have situations like this

Everyone assumes our defensive back end is going to be fixed because we fixed “communication issues”. There is a hard reality that Vonn Bell isn’t as good as he once was. There is a reality that skinny little Turner doesn’t take a step up. Is CTB a #1 corner? Is Stone going to be just as good here as he was in Baltimore? Is Hill going to be an upgrade at corner after 2 years at safety. I need to see it first. I want to believe we’re going to be a SB threat with a healthy burrow, but it’s not that simple.

You can barely even say he played safety for 2 years. He only played 14% of the defensive snaps his rookie season. He was basically a special teams player.

In hindsight it might have been better to not tag Bates and let Dax start right away. As it stands now he feels a year behind.

Yeah, I think that furthers my point. But I do think we had a good draft. Not as good as the burrow draft, but much better than last year. I think this draft produces 1 pretty good player, 1 good, and 1 more that gets a second contract. I’d take a guess and say that’s: Mims, Jenkins, Lee or Newton. Total guesses

Dax has the speed to be a boundary Corner. I think he is better suited to be a top Slot Corner myself though from what he has shown
but in the meantime I like Mike Hilton for this year who is fantastic. I just think when a big TE is in there and hurting us we need to put
Dax on him instead with his size over Mike. Dax can cover TE's better than Mike with his size and athleticism.
