Amarius Mims named best pick of 1st Round by PFF
#1
If this guy even half way lives up to the hype and potential surrounding his abilities, the Bengals will be in great shape at the RT spot for years to come.

Quote:The Cincinnati Bengals 2024 draft class has been touted by experts as one of the best in the NFL.

Now, per Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema, it’s selection of Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims is being declared the best of the first round.

Sikkema, who selected the best pick from each round of the 2024 draft, took Mims, who the Bengals took 18th overall, has his top first round selection, writing, “Mims is a fantastic athlete for his size but struggled with injuries at Georgia. Regardless, he allowed just six quarterback pressures across 402 career pass-blocking snaps and should start very soon, as Trent Brown is only a short-term solution for the team at right tackle.

“Mims is not a polished prospect — he is a level below former teammate and first-round pick Broderick Jones — but he brings sky-high potential.”
Here’s who Mims took as the best pick in each round of the draft:

1st Round: Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia (Cincinnati Bengals)
2nd Round: Cooper DeJean, DB Iowa (Philadelphia Eagles)
3rd Round: Andru Phillips, DB Kentucky (New York Giants)
4th Round: Javon Baker, WR UCF (New England Patriots)
5th Round: Sedrick Van Pran, C Georgia (Buffalo Bills)
6th Round: Mekhi Wingo, DT LSU (Detroit Lions)
7th Round: KT Leveston, OL Kansas State (Los Angeles Rams)

This is a little uplifting. I wasn't and still ain't all-in on the pick. But I do feel better about it.

i worry if he will be able to play a full season at the moment.

I think it's just about avoiding injuries and staying healthy because I think he's the best tackle in the draft but just hope that the injuries are behind him.

Lets hope it works out but just never know with injuries, others stay healthy in college and then get hurt in NFL... Eifert was very healthy in college and we know how NFL went.. Burrow overall healthy in college and has not been in NFL..

I agree with your points on Mims but Burrow's a bad example because of how bad our line has been and the beating he has taken.

Let's hope Mims stays healthy and is a Pro-Bowl tackle!

When I look at the first round, there really isn't a pick where you say, "Oh my God, that guy was selected WAY later than anticipated!" Rome Odunze didn't fall to 17, nor did Bowers fall to 21 etc. Most players went approximately where you anticipated them going and, generally, to the teams you were anticipating they'd go to.

The closest example to a major steal in the first round was Quinyon Mitchell, but he was from a small school and you never know with prospects like that. The Eagles were looking at CB2 and CB3, but ended up getting CB1, and that's great. But it's clear the focuses of the first round were the QBs, WRs and OL, so it makes sense that some defensive players would fall a bit.

For that reason, I think it makes sense that the OL with the highest ceiling in the entire draft going in the teens would be seen as a major steal. With how fast those guys were going off the board, I was genuinely scared that we'd be looking at Fautanu (who many question if he can stick at OT) or Guyton (who is all athleticism, little production) at 18. Luckily, the surge ended at 15 and we were still able to get our guy.

Mims doesn't have the highest floor in the class, but I think too many people are putting him in Guyton territory; that is, "athletic freak who is raw and needs to be coached up." Mims is an athletic freak, but he is well coached and is not particularly raw. He's just inexperienced. He got plenty of time working against that Georgia defense in practice and performed great against 2 of the best teams in the country in the playoffs as a Sophomore and continued through an SEC schedule as a Junior.

If he played a full season as a junior, he's probably going #7 to Tennessee. And that's the only risk; the injuries. If he continues to be injured every year in the NFL, he'll obviously not turn out to be everything we hope him to be, but if he can stay relatively healthy, I think he has All pro RT potential and his floor, if healthy, is probably still a solid tackle. No player is bust proof, but I don't see Mims as a prospect with an elevated risk of busting.

You can't just blame the line on Burrow injuries, other QBs have had similar hits and pressures and gone with a pretty clean health... maybe part of the problem is NFL is a more physical game than College so that could be why players like Eiffert and Burrow have been more injured in nfl than college.

It wasn't just one hit that I'm complaining about. Burrow has taken a lot of hits and taken a beaten since he has gotten here and all that adds up on your body.

Whose job is it to keep Burrow from getting hit? The offensive line.

I was instantly ready for Trent Brown to be the starting T when we signed him. And still was when we drafted Mims. But I’m warming up to the idea of Mims winning the starting job as a rookie. If he can beat out Trent. Why wait. If it’s a close competition. Might be best to roll with the future and let the guy start getting the game experience he is going to need.

Getting him at 18 was a steal!

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

I don't think Trent Brown is gonna make it through the season healthy. So I feel like we're gonna see Mims one way or another this year. I also think Mims' injury concerns are overblown.
I'm gonna break every record they've got. I'm tellin' you right now. I don't know how I'm gonna do it, but it's goin' to get done.

I see Brown as an upgrade over Jonah who lacked the strength to play LT or RT. I see Mims as upgrade over Jonah as well. The AFCN is a stacked on the DL and pass rush specialists like Watt and Garrett. Ravens are stacked at DT. We need strong OL to compete against these teams.

He is a rookie and lacks the experience of Williams, but I can see him starting at RT late in 2024 over Brown.

I love our OL now, great addition of Brown and Mims and also love the center from Miami for the future we got in round 7.

I am so ready for 2024 season. I love pro football and hoping for a great Bengals year. Regardless, always remember it is a game and entertainment.

That’s not obvious at all. People swore Trevor Lawrence was going to be the next greatest thing too and he hasn’t exactly lit the league on fire. He certainly hasn’t been the best pick of his draft class (Chase, Sewell, Parsons, etc).

The Bears situation is much better now than it was for Fields, but it’s still the Bears. That franchise is notorious for not being able to develop QB’s.

I hope our OL coach can help him become a great RT. I like the OL roster right now, but still have concerns about the coach. Mims is a beastly dude though for sure, and I loved the pick.

This is where I'm at as well. I like the pick but have reservations about his development at this level due to Pollack. I'm hoping part of Pollack's problem developing talent is the scheme / playcalling. The constant shotgun. The yearly tinkering with wide zone, which we are absolutely not built for. The lack of a passable running game.

Also, I wonder if they view Mims as a starter and I wonder how many preseason reps he's going to get. And I wonder, if he gets reps, if they'll play him strictly at RT so he can focus on ONE position, his natural position!

The quantity of hits Burrow has endured makes calling him injury prone a bit disingenuous.

Blaming his missed games and practices completely on being hit is every bit as disingenuous... The calf and appendix come to mind. There's some bad luck and bad management in there as well.
