He signed for the cheap to get another opportunity as well.
However, he's turning 30 in November, so it's not like he's got a whole career left.
But McLachlan would have to show up very well to unseat Hudson after what we saw last year.
McLachlan makes the most sense to go to the PS if Bengals only keep 4 TEs.
Really liked what I saw from Hudson as a pass catcher against Zone Defenses myself last year.
Yes, the age of Hudson makes me having him as the last one out if we don't stash McLachlan on the PS. Make sure we designate
McLachlan as one of our players that cannot be plucked though. Think McLachlan was a steal where we got him. Can Hudson go
on the PS is my question?

I know it will not happen, but I remember Travis Kelcie burning us in the preseason his rookie year. It was shocking me being a Bearcat fan and never seen him do that in college. So, who knows maybe one of our rookies goes beast mode in camp.
True on injuries, they always happen and TE's seem to get injured more than most positions. If Erick All can stay healthy he has the
talent to be a star in my opinion. Dude has strong hands, is hard as heck to tackle and can block. All could be an all around star TE for
us, pun intended.
But he would have to stay healthy for this to happen.

Here are the current PS eligibility rules, per https://www.bigblueview.com/2023/8/28/23847261/nfl-practice-squad-waiver-wire-pup-list-rules-deadlines-explained
Practice squad rules
How many players? NFL practice squads currently consist of 16 players.
Who is eligible? Here are the current eligibility rules:
- Players who do not have an accrued season of NFL experience.
- Free agent players who were on the Active List for fewer than nine games in their only accrued season.
- A maximum of 10 free agent players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons.
- A maximum of six free agent players with no limitations to their number of earned accrued seasons.
EDIT - It's worth pointing out the maximum a PS player can earn is $20k per week for a veteran player. That'd be like $350k for the season. That'd be a big dropoff compared to what Hudson signed for ($1.3 mill). He might try going elsewhere before considering a PS spot.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

So I get from this that we cannot put Hudson on the Practice Squad this year.
For this reason I expect McLachlan to go on the PS as Hudson is already a proven pass catcher against NFL Zone Defenses.
Need to designate McLachlan as one of the players that cannot be plucked though if this is the case. Talented player McLachlan.

I would assume Hudson falls into the last group - free agent player with no limitations to their number of earned accrued seasons
The only restriction seems to be that a team cannot stack an entire PS with veteran players. Only a max of 6 that fall under this last category.

Ah, must of overlooked that one, happy with that rule. Good news, didn't want to just cut Hudson.

You have to trust the coaches at this point, but we took 2 TE's in a poor TE draft and didn't take a guard or rb so it'll be a little disappointing if McLachlan gets cut. Not that I am all in on McLachlan, but.....

Actually, they would have to cut him in order to add him as one of those 6 free agent spots, meaning that he would be available on the open market for at least a day or two.
Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

I like Tanner Hudson but I don't think another team is gonna swoop in and pick him up if the Bengals cut him to put him on the PS. Maybe mid-season if there were some roster injuries. Of course, if we have injuries we could add him back to our 53 as well.

Yeah, but that isn't just outright cutting him because we have to. Most likely he would be back on the PS if this happens as we would
know the most about his health and condition than any other team.

Same way I think.

Unless McLachlan has a big training camp/preseason, I could easily see him being sent to the practice squad. I cant see many other teams being that interested in snagging a 25 year old 6th round rookie away from the Bengals. No one is going to claim him off waivers because the other team would need to have him on their active roster for a minimum of 3 weeks. The other team could try to sign him to their practice squad but if the Bengals ever felt they needed McLachlan they could poach him from that other team's practice squad.

Then the Bengals would be stuck keeping him active for 3 weeks...
And, can we quit calling it "poaching". Poaching as it applies to hunting is taking game out of season or through illegal measures. Claiming players off of practice squads is completely within the rules, so no "poaching".

That reminds me, off topic but, I haven't had a poached egg in forever.

Which is exactly why I said if the Bengals ever felt they needed him they could poach him. If you dont feel you need him you dont poach him. Your alternative would be to have him on the 53 man roster so another team couldnt sign him to their practice squad but then you are stuck with him taking up a roster spot until......
The only way you wouldnt be stuck with him is to cut him and put him the practice squad but then you are back to what I suggested in the first place.

Im not the one that came up with the term. And poaching refers to more than hunting. Ever had a poached egg? Nothing to do with illegal hunting.

He's not an egg being soft boiled, either.
