***Preseason GameDay Thread - Bengals @ Bears***
(08-17-2024, 05:57 PM)michaelsean Wrote: The thing you have to remember is that if backups have to play, they are playing with 9 or 10 starters instead of zero.

And that's fair, as I'm sure it had something to do with the obvious difference in performance.
Bengals in the first part of the game had backups going against Bears starters, and it was noticeable the difference.

I don't put a bunch of stock into preseason other than two things:
1) These games matter for deciding the last spots to make the roster
2) Do any of the backups give confidence in filling in adequately if a starter were to go down
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins

Our 2nds moved the ball better vs their 1st defense better than their firsts did vs our 2nd defense in the 1st qtr without question.

They had multiple 3 and outs, we didnt.  The context of their starters vs our 2nd & 3rd teamers is seemingly lost today.

Newton could survive.  Davis made a couple plays.
Jenkins flashed.
Ossai and Murphy would be ok.  Johnson showed promise.
Lee and Jaxson were not bad.
Williams has played real snaps.
Burton hd another big catch.
ADG, Batchie and Meta were solid.
Dax and DJ were blanketing.
Tycen had a good play.
All and McLachlan had catches.

Any of these guys could fill in for a few snaps.

Preseason win loss don’t matter. It’s our chance to see the depth.

They held for as long as they could but our 3rd and 4th team took on an onslaught from everything the Bears had 1st - 4th string. And by the second half they fell.

Who showed something is the question. I’ll start with Lee. Although someone is to blame for missing those corner blitzes. I’ll look forward to rewatching his snaps. That was a solid starting D he got good work against.

The Bengals 2nd string looked good against the Bears #1's. When the Bengals started putting in more 3rd and 4th string is when you saw the Bears take over the game. Im not sure why any Bengals fan would be surprised at that. There were some bright spots. Kirkland and Lee looked good out there. Burton made some nice plays. The #2s on defense mostly looked good.

i had to travel and was only able to see a little of game. How was the punting game? I see in the box score that a Bear had a 17-yard return and a 10-yard return. Were they line drives by Rehkow or just bad coverage?

Chiefs 0-2. Looks like they're in for a long season too.

Not that good, no hang time, one punt was short but got a 20 yard roll. Did drop one at 10 and had one from end zone went to 50 but  little hang time

The score was irrelevant. Second string D looked good and stopped the first string Bears offense. The Bears didn't move really until we had third string and scrubs in. Jenkins looked better also. With no offensive starters playing it was basically audition time, and Matt Lee still looks like a keeper. Given the lousy field conditions I agreed with Zac's call not to risk the 1s.

As long as Burrow and Chase are healthy. The Bengals, will be better than 10-7.

Yeah, if that was a real game our #1s would have destroyed the Bears

Although I appreciate the fandom passion in this thread this game means nothing for how the Bengals will perform throughout the upcoming season.

I would disagree on that because we know injuries happen now and during the season, these games are important for rosters , depth and areas where waiver wire might come into play.

There are some generalizations that could be made from that game. Like our defense is deep and our #2s pretty much held their number 1's. And our backup Oline pretty much held their #1 dLine. Missed a couple of safety blitzes, but for the most part Woodside had time.
